London, who recently visited the test-house of a well-known firm of Diesel engine builders, may enable readers to appreciate the success of the metallurgical chemist in evoly ing metals that will stand up to high temperature for long periods, During inspection, there was noticed a phenomenon regarding which we have not seen any men tion made previously. On one en gine the air intake manifold had been removed for convenience, and It was therefore possible to see the underside of the inlet valves, all of which were dull red. The engine was carrying a normal load, and the speed was only 1,200 rpm. The designer stated that the inlet valves always attained a red heat, and volunteered the opinion that the incoming air was insufficient to keep the valves cool. He added that on this particular design of engine the exhaust valves d'd not attain the heat reached by the in- let valves.

In the light of this experience, it la hardly surprising that valve seats are usually the first part of an engine to require the attention of the welding engineer,

A new system of high horizontal aerials has already been erected on the masts previously used by the national transmitter, with the result that during the latter. quar- ter of the year reception was greatly improved in South Africa. Similar developments are now in train for the Improvement of trans- missions directed to other parts of the world. During the year the B.B.C.'s Research Department was rehoused in more suitable premises Research has continued on new types of microphones, the correct acoustical design of studios, high power transmitter and aerial de- sign, and many other problems.

Progress has been made in the available methods of recording programmes for subsequent re- broadcasting, work of particular value to the Empire service. Con- siderable attention has also been given to the problem of preventing Interference with broadcast re- ception caused by electrical machinery of all kinds. The Cor poration's engineers have continu ed to act on various committees, several of which are international in character Especially progress has also been made in the develop ment of the Empire programmes

bave just completed two chassis to comply with the new specification, and these are suitable for 24-seater saloan bodies.

The bodies are being built by the Municipality in Penang. to drawings supplied by Ransomes. They will have an overall length of 21 ft. 7ins., an overall width of 7 ft. 2in, and a small turning circle of 47 ft. over the complete bus.

SPECIAL DESIGNS

The chassis is specially designed for trolley bus service, and special attention has been given to obtain- ing the lowest possible loading line, the entrance being at the rear.

Both front and rear axles are, of the drop-forged type with a pedal operating the brakes on the front and rear wheels, and a hand brake of the ratchet pattern operating the rear wheels only. Although not equipped with a'r-pressure brakes, excellent results have been obtained. both from the pedal and manually operated gear, the stop- ring distance being under 25 ft from 20 p.m.h., when the hand and foot brakes are operated simul- taneously. This is extremely neces- sary, owing to the congested traffic iri which the vehicles will run.

Marles steering gear is incor- porated, and the propeller shaft is one of the Hardy Spicer needle roller type

HIGH PRESSURE TYRES/

The tyre equipment is manufac÷ cured by the Firestone Company. 34 ins. by 7ins, high pressure, singie tyres, being fitted on the front and 34 ins. by 7 ins. twin on the rear. The vehicles are driven by 35 b.h.p. series motors, designed for the series field regulated system of control. They are, as usual, de- signed and constructed at Ran- somes works, and are of the fabricated type generally similar to the well-known light-weight motor. Insulation 18 class "B" throughout, and commutation is sparkless at 150 per cent, overload with fully diverted field.

' In view of the special circums- tances in which these buses will operate. It was decided to employ rheostatic-braking operated from the same pedal as the usual mechanical foot brake. This is line with the Ransomes' paterit re- generative and rheostatic system of control, stace it is claimed that the only effective way in which the full benefits of electric, braking. can be obtained is by operating it from the normal brake pedal, thus rendering its use by the driver compulsory. The control gear is manufactured by Messrs Allen West and Co., Ltd.

LOW CONSUMPTION Experience has shown that high speeds in a public service: vehicle are of little use where traffic is congested or the stops per mile very frequent, but that high ac- celeration is of får greater import- ance. With these principles in mind, the buses have been design- ed for a top speed of approximate- ly 20 mp.h, and tests indicate that, as a consequence of this and the system of control employed, the current consumption will be. very low indeed

It is interesting to note that "Broomwade" compressors for portable duty are of the pat- ent sleeve-value type and have many outstanding features. It may here be explained, that in recent years attempts have been made to increase the speed of compressors so that they would

oupled direct to modern and comparatively high-speed en- gines: but compressors with or- dinary spring loaded valves fall to function satisfactorily at high speeds, and their volumetric cffelency is considerably reduc ed, because spring loaded valves. unless they operate with a very high lift, do not give free passage to the air into and from each cylinder; the increase in ft. however, has the effect of causing heavy valve breakages.

[* «DIFFICULTY SOLVED

The sleeve-valve design intro- duced by Broom and Wade, Ltd., has solved the difficulty. In the sleeve-valve compressor the pass- age of the air into and from each cylinder is" controlled by a single reciprocating sleeve. which is positively operated according to the speed of the engine. The only valve required "is the non- return valve, which consists of a thin annalar plate of greater diameter than cylinder bore, and therefore, enabling & sufficient discharge area to be. obtained with a very small life. Thus the : "Broom.wade" compressor is emin- ently suitable for operating⠀⠀at 1,000-1,200 r.p.m., and is directly coupled to engine. The adoption of the sleeve-valve has, more cver, enabled the cylinder clear- ance to be considerably reduced and the water-cooled, area. in creased

hose is easily deteriorated by overheated air.

AUTOMATIC UNLOADER

The compressor is furnished -with an automatic unloader and engine-speed control, which" upon the working pressure in the re- ceiver being reached, unloads the compressor and idles the engine. thereby

exfecting considerable economy in fuel consumption.

The driving unit consists of a four-cylinder Listar Diesel engine. developing 38 b.h.p. at 1,000 r.p.m The unique feature of the engine is the patented combustion cham- her, which ensures easy starting from cold by hand without the use of cartridges or other devices. The fuel consumption is only two Fallons per hour when plant is running continuously against full load, and is much less under nor- mal working conditions, when the plant is used for the operation of pneumatic tools."

As can be seen from the accom- panying illustration, the compres- sor plant is mounted on the rigid all-steel chassis with sprung axles and

four rubber-tyred wheels. The sides of the steel housing are detachable, and can be closed down and locked. The plant is. very compact and easily portable, It weighs only 5,820 lb, and can be safely towed at any ordinary lorry speed

FLOOD PREVENTION

Hankow, July 8.-Definite en- gineering measures for protecting Hankow and its environs 'against a decided food catastrophe were upon at a conference of the in- terested organs. convened here yesterday under the auspices of the Han River Engineering Bureau.

It was decided to raise all dykes of lower height to the standing hight of 50 feet, the maximum water-mark at the Hankow Cus- toms.

Over 100 junks and four steam- ers will be hired to transport earth and other necessary materials to the Huangpel Area, north of Han- kow, for reinforcement of the nd

dykes there.

The provision of an efficient cooling system is of the greatest Importance for satisfactory ser- vice of au air compressor operat- ing in a country with a hot clim- ate. The "Broomwade" plant the eficient cooling of the com pressor is safeguarded by the adoption of the separate water- circulating pumps, one for serving the water jackets of the compres sor, and another for those of the and compressor engine. Thus, engine are independent of each other as regards cooling, the wa- ter being passed through a large fan-cooled radiator, and the com pressor, which is at all times run as cool as possible, delivers re- markably cool air, thus effecting considerable saving on hose, as
