Van Ryn's volleying was daring and he was almost impregnable at the net. Perry under-rated his opponent, and he lost the first set to him at 4-6. In the fourth set, when Perry was leading by five to three and was playing for match point; he angled the ball and ran to the ne, with outstretched hand. He thought he had won the match. but the point was given out.

Thereafter Perry clowned his way through another ten games. The complete game score was:-4-6. 6-1, 6-3, 10-8.

The British star thus enters the

final stages of the tournament with the fast sixteen survivors, who in clude:-Sidney Wood, Donald Budge, both Americans, H. C. Hop- man. McGrath, both of Australia,

Miss Scriven of Britain ac counted for Mrs. Sheppard-Barron after two stiff sets, 13-11, 8-3. All reached the third round.

played at King's Park. Although the C.R.C. were expected to win quite easily they had one or two anxious. moments In the first round. The Fincher Bros, played very well to beat Hung and Ho in a very evenly fought set. Pagh and Grose on the next court were doing very well leading ru and Tennie Kwok by 5 games to four and Pagh's service. Fagh, for some unaccountable reason, served very badly to lose the game and the Chinese pair made RO mistake about the next, two games: I Pagh and Grose had won this set this would have given the K.C.C. | 6 for 381 Essex: 200 and 62 for a, lead or two sets to one on the 1. first round. Oppenheim and Hesse losing badly to Lee Wal Tong and Luk Ding Cheung.

This then might have upset the C.R.C. for the Fincher Bras were. expected to beat their next two couples and the match would have been very very close Indeed. In fact in the second round Oppen- heim and Hesse very nearly beat Iu and Kwok losing the set after a very well fought game by 7-5.

Yamagishi and Nishimura, two very much fancied players, ad- vanced further at the expense of Billington and Scaff of Great Bri- tain, winning in straight sets. 6-2, 6-4, 6-4. For the C.R.C. Hung and Ho played well and had matters very much their own way with the ex ception of their match against the Flacher Bros. Hung was not volley

scen him. Ho was also, not "get- ting much pace behind his shots. Lee Wal Tong and Luk Ding Cheung combine well as a pair, their net play being exceptionally good. Of the three pairs probably the weakest is that of Iu Tak Cheuk and Tennie Kwok, the lat- ter being brought in from their other team in the "A" Division. Iu was not playing well, his-smash- ing and volleying repeatedly let him down. Kwok was steady and would do well to put a bit more pace into his shots.

The losers were best served by the Fincher Bros, who again de- monstrated that they are the only pair likely to give trouble to others. 9.32 E. M. Bryden, R. C. Webb

high order. His brother, E C., played his usual calm and steady game. Pagh and Grose have the makings of a very good pair, both are playing very well and will make 2 very good combination if they. are kept together. Oppenheun and Hesse played gallantly, this being their first game together. Hesse has not yet got used to the turf, courts having played practically all nis tennis on hard courrs. Oppen: helm would do better if he were to steady down a bit instead of having a bang at everything.

The C.R.C. favourites for the Mixed Doubles title, helped by Misy R. Rumjahn of the I.R C. beat the K.C.C. "A" team by 5 sets to four After a hard fight. For the C.R.C. Eo and Mrs. Litton played ex- ceptionally well and the only hard fight given them was by Miss Grimths and E. F. Fincher, Mrs. Litton, although a bit slower than formerly played very steadily and was never flurried. Miss Rumjehn partnered Lee Wai Tong and the success of the team as in ne small measure due to her. She drove and served very well. She was also very ably backed up by

Lee.

Hung was partnered by Miss Lee and lost all three sets. Miss Lee was much too weak..

For the K.C.C. Miss Grimis played well against Mrs. Litton and Ho. It is a pity she cannot get out of the habit of scouping her shots. She would improve her play by at least 15 if she took the bali higher and hit with a flat racket Miss Dalziel started of very nervously against Ho, and I have never seen her play worse. She however played very much better in the next two sets, Miss Mackenzie had an on day, her driving and volleying falling her the men the Fincher badly Of Bros were steady, but Guest wa
