ASCOT
Backless Hat Styles
Will the war against frills and four.ces succeed? Leading dress- makers believe that it will While Ascot gowns will be ground- length, full from the hips and graceful, they will not be fussy as they were last year.
"Frocks have become so fury for evening." one dressmaker told me "that women are "deter- mined not to wear anything frilly for Ascot."
This accounts for the popula- rity

Hats in felt with CrOWILS of broderie anglais or tulle will re- of the intest and present some most interesting of the Ascot mileinery. A sensational Breton sailor shape, in navy felt with two blue ostrich plumes has a crown of palest pink, broderie anglale. Newest of all is the backless hat. in reality half a hat, in felt or straw. and at the back a band of felt or ribbon. alled with masses of tiny glycerin- ed wings of all colours, or clest clusters of floral petals. Ma- genta, a crude green-yellow, cur- rants and daisies made in cotton, wool and silk are all there. Some of these 'backless hats resemble a Jockey cap held by a strap. ·
Very lovely are the large lace shapes covered in stitched tulle, in plain neutral shades, belge over a pale green patterned lace, Purple lace veiled with palest orange. tulle is another Idea.
WHITE CREPE FOR DINING
Joan Bennett, who is starred in Paramount's "Mississippl" with Bing Crosby • and `W. C. Fields, and is Francis Lederer's leading lady in "The Pursuit Of Happia. ness." is wearing a delightful and urusual white crepe gown for the evenings.
The bodice, tled at the neck with a bow, and the flowing sleeves are all in one piece and the ankle length skirt is in three tlers, each of which has B'DOX- plent in the centre back and front.

The bodice and box-pleats, in- cluding the lowest tier of the skirt, are adorned with large pearl buttons,

SUMMER Style
VELVET TO BE WORN WITH
PRINTED LINENS
Clothes and entertaining will both call upon resources during this sassive summer season, nor is it. possible to think of one without the other. For out-door func- tions velvet will combine with old-fashioned floral linen pzmts on clear grounds in a most attrac- "uve manner. One of these is a semi-fitted tunic style from Heim, with brown velvet which 'finishes In a swathed waistbelt. There is Also, a mat white tunic, with pip- ed-out shoulders and a diamond shaped high-fronted. corselet waistbelt. This appears over dark red with a shady, red felt hat.
THE FLORAL MOTIF

A long-sleeved frock in one of the old printed linens goes with sleeveless waistcoat of brown velvet. Any dark colour, chosen from the tiny floral motif on its light ground of the linen, could be used for the coatee. Other con- trasts in velvet' accompany, fioral

TRAINING THE HAIR
In The Way It Should Go
Well-Tended nails are a matter
of careful attention, a, poor com- plexion can be' camouflaged, but. hair is hair. If it is ugly, looks unkempt, or is not properly ar- ranged it can run the prettiest dress and the loveliest face.
It is of no use thinking that a bad head of hair Will come right in some miraculous manner, be- cause there is probably some- thng radically wrong with the roots. Before treating that side of the question it is as well to ex- periment with various ways of doing the hair.
Į
While one mus arrangit in " the way" which is the individ-" ual best, it is worth while trying
to combine a becoming coiffure with the natural way in which-
hair grows and falls.
OF ITS OWN ACCORD To do this, take a comb (this is. best done when the hair has not been "set" for some time) and run it briskly through the hair. You will be sure to find that it is in- clined to go in a certain direction of its own, accord, and if you are clever, or your hairdresser is clever, it will always pay to "aet" it as nearly as possible, in that particular drection.....
IL
Some hair grows in a double crown, and then it is practically impossible to make a good side parting, for it is going against the direction of the growing hair, and the most you can do is to make a very short parting. A cen- tre parting may get over the dif aculty, bur the latter is ageing and becoming only to a certain type of classical feature.
It is nearly always possible to find out the way the hair likes to lie, and if you "set" it in that direction, you will have the plea- 'sure of being able to run the comb carelessly through it, knowing that it whil fall agreeably intö those waves.
If you suffer from greasy hair which needs constant washing the probablities are that the olilness ia due to a secretion at the roote
Shoulders are punched out again This upsets the whole "working
by Helm and Schiaparelli in tal- lored jackets. The revival will be. welcomed by those who can carry them well, and since all day-wear skirts veer towards slim lines,"
a movement which makes them kcok even silmmer should be en- couraged. This is what occurs when plain-coloured coatee jac- kets are worn over dark coloured frocks.
HIGHER WAISTLINE
These new coloured jackets are ready for immediate wear in red or bright green with the contrast

"Florals" comes in two definite colours, for example, black and white, with the vivid contrast in a green velvet Uning matching a swathed belt and cowl collar op a black tailored dress. The new veivet combination in summer mood is interesting and appears
WHITE PIQUE STORY
Suppose you go in for white pique neckpieces. They are fresh, they are charming, and they give you opportunities of getting plenty. of variety at the smallest possible cost. A simple navy blue or black rock, for instance, can be wom one day with a demure round collar, and the next with a whole festive spray of Lowers at the throat. A couple of daisies into the buttonhole of your suit gives a lighthearted touch,

These new ensembles are fre- quently carried out in linen, one example, consisting of a black dreas with red coatee and belt.

This condition calls for examin- ation under the microscope by an expert, and a few treatments and the intelligent use of a lotion at home will restore the scalp to health,
SOFT AND GLEAMING

· So little attention is paid to the question of grey hair by beauty ..tera, it being often tacitly as- sumed that the owners thereof will dye it, thus hiding their shame, Grey hair can be lovely, and perhaps is prettiest of all in conjunction with a young face, The secret is to keep it very light=" looking in its arrangement and, to avoid stiff waves, but, on the other had never allow it to ap- pear" unkempt.
It generally pays to keep grey hair well thinned and cut in a tapering manner so as to allow This plenty of light and shade. helbs to preserve the silvery ef fect.
Lumps of grey hair are ageing and unbecoming, and it should always be treated as a frame to the face, even more so than other coloured hair.
