Suffolk

(Special Air Mail Service)

London, May 31, H.M.S. Suffolk, Captain Erro Manners, A.D.C., is to leave Hong Kong, on Monday next for Shang bal to embark the valuable art objects which will form the nucleus. ot the Chinese Art Exhibition to be held next winter at the Royal Academy. The action of the Ad-. miralty in granting permission for the Suffolk to bring home these objects relleved the promoters of the exhibition of a grave difficulty, for on account of the possibility of the collection being captured by Chinese pirates-if-conveyed by an ordinary cargo steamer very heavy insurance charges would have been incurred had this method of conveyance been inevitable. The Suffolk was in any case required in England for large repairs. She 'should be 'at Shanghai from June 8 to 8, Hong Kong from June 11 to 13, Singapore on June .18" and 19, and will then proceed to Ports- mouth, where she is due towards the end of July.

It is clear from our Feking corre- spondent's message that the Chin- esc Exhibition in London next win- ter should be one of great excel- lence. For three millenniums the Chinese bave set an appreciation of art above most other values of life. They followed it with an in- tensity of respect greater even than that of the Greeks. Their tales and legends have preferred to celebrate not the successful warriors or the romantic brigands but the inven- tors of some new porcelain clay, of some more subtle glaze or pigment. A lifetime was nothing, we know. for them to consider spending on the manipulation of “a single vase No society will repeat their achieve-cert by the Lincolnshire Regiment ment without repeating their a at Shamshulpo,
