London, May 25. It is not quite a century since May 18 witnessed an event of great importance in the history of Scol- 18th tish religion. During the century, in Scotland as in Eng- land, religious enthusiasm was at a low, ebb. A latitudinarian move ment, called by the name of Mo- deratiam was widespread, and no doubt did much to destroy the spirit of Intolerance and to widen the intellectual outlook of the com- munity as a whole.

But mere morality, however ex- cellent, coud not satisfy the Scot- tish longing for dogmatic teaching, and the common people did not share the fashionable contempt for "enthusiasm." Moreover, the Mo- derates
