In Changli County. 131 miles northeast of Tlents.n. Miss Lester found 118 Japanese and 47 Korean establishments open.y traftaking in oplum, morphine, and heroin, frequently in conjunction with pawnshops and gambling saloons. All these were opened during the

I was told that conditions are much worse in many other parts of the, zone, Miss Lester said: "My investigation convinced me that a large, alice of North China, about | Am 8,000 square miles in with a population or 6.000.000. Is being honeycombed with Japan- ese and Korean drug pedlars, and there is a grave danger that the social and economic fabric of the whole region is undermined. As these traffickers are not amenable to Chinese law, there appears to be little that the local Chinese officials can do unless they can obtain the co-operation of the Ja- panese authorities. The question is whether such co-operation is likely to be forthcoming.”
Mlis Lester is planning a visit to Japan in order to make known the results of her investigation.

As the wife of a British official Beatrix Metford was familiar with the Frontier. Meeting for years, and she was also familiar with the life of the major tribes among wham her husband served. In France, where the air raid Deril is more immediate than here, children are taught to use gas masks, Recently ine of the Paris papers had a full-page advertise- ment showing these in all sizes,
