Hope's father was a naval officer, and this seems to have influenced her early dramatic career, "for after her seaweed performance she next appeared in the role of a sea-shell! She might have been a mermaid next. but she had to go to school.

When she was seventeen Hope went for a year to the Central School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art, That completed. she toured in "Cynara" with Zena Dare and Martin Lewis, under- studying Isla Bevin in the leading part.

When Isla left the company to become a screen star. Hope took the lead.
