BATTERY IMPROVEMENTS
be-
Sb, much is the battery taken or granted that it is not always realised that battery manufac- turers are constantly striving to Improve their products, ` Thus. Joseph Lucas. Ltd. "have re- cently made Certain improve- ments. one important, one ing in the Milam containers. consisting of a reinforcement of an acid-resisting non-conducting material which is more elastic than the Milam material used for the case. "This reinforcement is in the form of a capping plece. which 13 inserted during the moulding process and forms integral part of the case, serv- ing to strengthen the partitions. especially at the top. where they are most highly stressed.
an
The "reason for this develop- ment is as follows. On the first Alling of a battery considerable heat is developed by the chemical reaction between the asid and the negatives plates, resulting in the intercell partklon becoming, hot. While the outer case is com- paratively coci. This has been known to result in cracks deve- loping in the partitions. but the new reinforced partitions over- come this possibility of trouble.
Another improvement Is the development of special and- corrosive alloy for battery cable lugs. Hitherto it has been neces- sary to keep terminals clean and covered with vaseline in order to prevent corrosion. but the new alloy has been subjected to arduons tests in comparison with other terminals, and it is immune from corrosion.
POLICE PATROL THAT
ERRED --
A friend of mine had a rather amusing experience the other day. writes a correspondent. It appears he was a pedestrian for. the time being, and as a well- brought-up citizen. proceeded to cross a road by way of the Bellsha safety zone just short of a busy crossing, writes a correspondent to the "Autocar," Judge at his astonishment, then, when he ar- rived at the other side of the road and found his path blocked by a car, stationary, well and truly obstructing the right of way be- tween the glistening studs, and Imagine his delight at discovering the car to be a police vehicle with mobile police on board.
It thereupon became his duty to point out to the police the error of their ways, upbraiding them and rebuking them for such a flagrant breach of regulations,
THEORY OF ACCIDENT
* REPEATERS
Careful records are kept by some police departments to detect accl- dent repeaters, the sound theory being that a man involved in a succession of accidents either dri- ves reckily by habit or is un- consciously addicted to some driv- ing peculiarity that causes cidents. In either case, the ac- cident repeater can often be re- formed by adequate punishment or correction of his peculiarity.
AC-
Investigation and punishment following accidents are also being undertaken in a number or places. In nearly every accident some- body is definitely to blame. But the guilty person is too rarely blamed by anybody except a com- plainant in 3 civil sul: for dam- ages. And if the defendant is in- sured, he has nothing to worry about. Many a motorist is heard to remark, following an accident. "It's all right. T insured." But It isn't all right. if the police are on the job. If they make an im- mediate Investigation of the at- cident and arrest the driver who caused it, regardless of any civil sult that may or
be may not brought, more reckless drivers may think of consequences before accidents rather than trisurance after them. There shouldn't be any insurance against arrest.

It is possible that the Prince. subject to the King's approval, will be on board his mercantile "flag-" ship when the King reviews the assembled naval, mercantile and fishing feets.
It was in February. 1928, that the Prince became Master of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets of the Empire by "the King's. And the Royal car returned to special wish and direction." CHILDREN SEE THE MOST Screams of delight from aston- ished chlidren heralded the approach of the King and Queen, and everywhere I went in the wake of the Royal party I discovered that it was the kiddies who had seen the most—the » Kiddies who had been playing on the pavements and swarming over the roadway when the limousine appeared.
Their cries brought grown-ups rushing down fron A Sunday afternoon nap. and so slow' was the progress of the King and Queen that fathers and mothers were able to catch up with the procession by running down the road.
The enthusiasm of the fashion- able West End paled beside this tribute from the East.
Where could you and a âner dis- play than the "gally-painted "Red. White and Blue House," as it has become.. known in Grenade-street, outside which the King and Queen stopped their car.
SMILING AND WAVING
"I'm on the parish, and it was the best I could do." Mrs. Emily Bee told me, "but it let them see that we love them round here...
"That flag over the street I hung out when the King came to the Throne, and it's a bit faded now. but those other banners are all right. I made them out of pillow stips, which I dyed red and blue.
"I was upstairs when the King and Queen came along, as I'm not very well. But then I heard the kids screaming,, and somcone dashed in and said: "Emily, the King and Queen! I rushed down and got a beautiful view.
"All the kids were scrambling in front of the car, touching it and jumping on the running- boards, and the King and Queer- were smiling and waving to them. Now they're been round this way they'll know what we really think of them." Before this the royal car had passed down White Horse-lane, off the Mile End-road where Miss Marka had been called out into the street by the excited cheering of the children."
"It was absolutely thrilling when the King and Queen drove past," she told me, "and I'm so excited that I can hardly remember the detalls, but i do Know that the Queen's hat was of Jubilee blue."
CEILING OF FLAGS -
Slowly the car, drove down the bedaggod road, past Shandy-street and Lydia-street, from which the light has almost been shut by the canopy of" flags strung from win- dow to window.
"At each corner the car came almost to a stop." Mrs, Reeves, of White Horse-lane, told me, "and I could see, the Quéen pointing down each side turn- ing, showing the King and the Princesses all the decorations. They seemed as happy as could
be.
The Prince "has from the first taken a keen interest in his duties as Master, and has missed .no opportunity of promoting by deed and word the welfare of the vital sea services over which he presides. No surprise will be caused, there- fore, should he have decided to "take command" of the merchant- men and fishing vessels which have been invited to attend the Jubilee Review on July 16.
