Brigadier F. S. QFggott, DSO, who is placed on half-pay to-day, has been Deputy Military Secre- tary since December, 1936, and before then was a General Staf Officer 1st Grade) in the Direc- torate of Military Operations and Intelligence at the War Office from July, 1927,

He was educated at Cheltenha College and the Royal Military Academy and was commissioned in the Royal, Engineers in February. 1901. At the outbreak of War in -1914 he was on the General Staff at the War Office and later, served in Egypt and Frances He was Ave times mentioned in dispatches and was promoted Brevet Lleutenant- Colonel. After the War Brigadier Piggott graduated at the Staff College and in 1920 returned to the War Office. From 1921 to 1928 he was Military Attaché at Tokyo. He had previously been in Tokyo, where he was specially employed. from 1904 to 1906 during the Russo- Japanese. War, and quailted as a 1st Class Interpreter in Japanese in 1906 and again. In 1912. He was attached to the Staff of the Crown Prince of Japan during his visit to England in 1921, and in the same. year served with the Military Sec- tion of the British Empire Delega- tion to the Washington Conference on the limitation of armaments.

London, May 18. clin-top cheers from waiting crowds, and hoisted flags welcomed the battleships of the Home Fleet when they dropped anchor off Southend yesterday.

Some of them passed by in their way to London. but others are staying at Southend for a week.

They looked a formidable line of monsters with jutting guns, led by HMS, Nelson the 40,000-ton flag- ship of the Commander-in-Chief of the Home Fleet (the Earl of Cork and Orrery).

are inevitably much in demand for ceremonial occasion's, but they can only accept a Emited number-at Invitations to attend such functions. In spite of the heavy work which the Jubilee has entalled for the Prince of Wales.. his Royal Highness has graciously consented to lay the foundation Stone of the new building of the Royal Empire Society on June 2. This date coincides with the seven- tieth birthday of HM the King,

The Mayor of Southend paid a formal visit to the Commander-in- Chief on the Nelson during the afternoon. The mayoral party was transported in the Admiral's barge."
