PLAN TO MANUFACTURE

RUBBER

Two Europeans On Trial- At Singapore

Singapore, May 25. An alleged application for a patent for manufacturing rubber by mixing it with other chemicals caused two middle-aged Europeans to stand their trial before Mr. Norman Grice. the Singapore second magistrate, yesterday.

F. J. J. M., Van Cant was charged With cheating one Ahmad bin Kadir Natna, Maricar while E, H. Schirmer was charged with abet- ment.

Court Inspector Maclennan pro- secuted. Mr. M. Mitter was ex- pected to defend Van Cant but withdrew from the case before the start. Mr. A. V. L. Davies defend- ed Schirmer.

Ahmad bin Kadir Naina Maricar said he was a broker. He had known a man named Joseph Long as a friend for the last 20 years. He met Long last May and was told that there was a Belgian who had a rubber patent and that Long had two shares in that business for $2,000,

Witness was interested but was told there were no

shares available. He was, however, in- vited to meet the Belgian and ac- cepted. On going to an hotel in Middle Road they met the two ac-, cused. He was assured again that no more shares in the business were available.

EXPLAINED PROCESS

Van Cant, however, promised to consider witness' request for the allotment of one of Van Cant's shares. The price suggested was $1.000. Explaining the process 'the patent the accused # four pleut of "other thing ed with one picul of"ru" mutild produce five picuis of rober.

Witness was also told that the

patent had been sent to America by a lood legal firm and that the patent might realise anything tro $50.000 to $2,000,000. A couple days later Schirmer called on him to say that Van Cant would allot him one share. The reason given was that Van Cần; needed money for expenses and to form an all company. Witness, accompanied by Schirmer and Long, thereupon went round to Van Cant's hotel. After every- thing had been fixed up they met next day at Schirmer's office and he gave an advance of either $100 OF $150. The receipt was signed by the two accused and by: Lông.

A few days later Schirmer made an application for more money on behalf of Van Cant and witness promised to Bee about. It in a couple of days. He then gave Schirmer 3100 and received a re- ceipt signed by Van Cant.

WIFE'S MONEY

The arrangement was that the

balance of the payment for the one "share would be deducted from the profits accruing to the share. The receipt was made out in his wife's name because the money was really hers. He had not dab- bled in shares before and be con- sidered the receipt quite sufficient.

He met both Van Cant and Schirmer at different times about two months later. He was advis- ed to be patient as the money had already been sent to America,

He was called to the Detective Station later. Previous to that he had given a sample of the patent by Schirmer. He did not make any complaint at the Detective Station but a statement was taken from him. To date he had not received his share at the time he had not demanded his $500 back.

In reply to first accused witness said that he had discussed matters both with Long and Schirmer first. He had never made a complaint either to the police or to anybody else that he had been cheated.

Van Cant: Do you personally think that you have been cheated

by me?

Witness: No, I do not think so. Continuing witness said that 'he had heard Schirmer admitting to Van Cant that he (Schirmer) had not paid for the shares to hla name.

Cross-examined by Mr. Davies Aness said that he had known Schirmer for about 18 years and regarded him as a !!

Referring to the Anchor Line. Sir Percy said it had been asso clated with the Cunard Company for nearly a quarter of a century. The association began to 1912. when the Cunard Company bought the whole of the Ordinary capital at a par value of £250,000. I they had gone further and bought the Preference capital of £325,000 at par, the present position might never have arisen.
