BIG CASH SWEEP PRIZE: MILE AND QUARTER RECORD LOWERED
Poor attendance, which might have been die to the threatening weather, mar. red the Spring Meeting of the Macao Jockey Club held yesterday at Areia Preta.
The heavy downpour of rain earlier in the afternoon dampened the spirit of race goers and jockeys alike but it was not enough to prevent Mr. Hem's Bayardo to win by a short head from Daylight Eve in the Sui Tai Handicap and, inciden- tally, creating a new record for that distance (1 miles) by lowering Mr. K. H. Kay's Ajax's record of May 8, 1932 by 1.7 of a sec.
Donald Black was the most sucessful jockey, finishing the day with three firsts. Dividends on the whole were moderate and it was left to Miss Torbett on Partnership in the last race to return the highest dividend of the day--$63.20.
Cash Sweep figures were low due no doubt to the poor attendance.. The special $5 sweep for the Chairman's Cup was drawn and the first prize of $48,200 is bè lieved to have been drawn by somebody in Japan.

TAI SHAN HANDICAP (SECOND
SECTION)
Seven starters went to the start- ing post in a continual drizzle and A good a strong wind blowing. send off with Fudge immediately pfront. It looked an easy thing for this pony with Sarabande slowly coming up from the fourth and Bold position, Partnership Captain following at one and a half length behind.
On the stretch, Fudge was never extended and romped home four lengths ahead of Sarabande with two lengths separating the latter and Bold Captain
SUI TAI HANDICAP" Four pontes faced the starter. From the start Daylight. Eve and
Bistre were in front with Bayarda and Cavalcade in the rear. When the post was reached Daylight Eve came to the front with one length seporting each of the other ponies. At the mile post Cavalcade made a dash and the last three ponies were bunched together with Day- light Eve a length in front, At the stretch Bistre and Cavalcade were out of the running and a keen tussle for honours was seen be- tween Bayardo and Daylight Eve. The favourite finally won by short head to break the record for the distance by 17 secs.
SUI AN HANDICAP
The weather had improved by the time this race was due to start. There were seven starters with Backsmith taking the lead follow- ed closely by Locksley Hall Flam- ingo and Bold Major. At the half mile post Beginner's Lück went up with Locksley Hall and Bold Major running strongly after him. At the stretch Bold Major made a bold bid but was strongly challeng- ed by Beginner's Luck with Flam- ingo u close third.
יו
Beginner's Luck eventually won by a short head from Bold Major a length separating the second and Flamingo.
THE CHAIRMAN'S CUP
A good start was seen, in this race with Boxing Eve leading the field, What A Chance and Double Chance following respectively a length"and 2 lengths behind. The same positions were maintained practically throughout the course. Great Hall which was fourth in the wake shot up at the stretch and was strongly challenged by What A Chance. Boxing Eve won with a length to spare with a short head between Great Hall and What A Chance.
KIN SHAN HANDICAP Plain View was left behind at the start with Tammany Hall in the lead followed closely by Twenty Grand and Boldler of Peace. The same positions remained until the half mile post when Boldier of Peace came forward with Twenty - Grand still second. Round the quarter mile post Twenty Grand came strongly forward closely pur- sued by Soldier of Peace. Diogenes which at one time was running strongly dropped back and Plain View gradually came, forward. A great struggle was seen between Twenty Grand and Boldier of Peace, the former just managing toanish first, Plain View was a poor third, about three lengths behind
TAI SHAN HANDICAP
Wrrington came up steadily when reached, the mile post was Limelight Chivalrous, and War- rington came in for a great race and Donald Black rode a well judged race to beat Warrington by a short head. Limelight was half Mr a length behind,
LADIES SPRINT (UNOFFICIAL)
The Ladles Sprint brought the afternoon's races to a close after a unimpressive start. Five very
Bold starters went to the post.
Ebony Captain was ahead with Idol and Sarabande in the rear. At the stretch a great struggle de- veloped between Partnership and Bold Captain. Partnership came up from third place: Miss Torbett pleased her supporters by paying $83.20 for a wins It was. in- cidentally, the highest dividend for the day.

for the long jump with a leap of 26 feet 8 inches, the previous re- cord being 26 feet 21 inches set up by Chuhei Namu in Tokio in 1931.
Earlier in the day Owens equal- ed Wykoff's record of 9.4 seconds for the 100 yards.
Not satisfied with these two achievements, however, Owens went on to create a sersation by setting up two more new records. First of all he sent his supporters mad with delight by Anishing the 220 yards in 20.3 seconds against the previous world record of 20.8 seconds set up by Roland Locke. Nebraska in 1928 and hardly had the thrill worn off than he finish- ed the 220 yards low hurdles in 22.6 seconds, thus setting up three world records in a day.
Owens was not allowed to walk off the track after the hurdles event. He was mobbed by his fellow students who carried him shoulder high while the Ohio State University's war, cry echoed and re-echoed all over the field- Reuter.
