Lady Southorn Opens Meeting
The Arst meeting of the Anglo Chinese Women's Committee of the British Empire and China Trade Fair was held at 10.30 am. On Thursday at Government
House, and was graciously opened by Lady Southorn, C.BE. Prest- dent of the Committee.
Lady Southern expressed the Committee's desire to further the
aims of the Women's Conference
to be held in connection with the Trade Fair in December, after
which she turned the business of the meeting over to Lady Shenton,
Chairman of the Committee.
The purpose of the meeting was. to discuss plans for the Women's Conferance, which will be Inau- gurated the second week of the Fair-from the 9th to the 18th of December and to formulate a de- finite programme of welcome and entertainment for the women from all parts of the Empire and Dominions who will be in Hong Kong at that time.
The object of the Women's
Conference during the Trade Fair is to make it possible for the women of China to meet the Wo- men of the British Empire, to be- come acquainted with their various points of view and to establish a mutual understanding and friend- ship.

As Lady Shenton took over the business of the meeting, she made the motion that, "Those present at the meeting agree unanimous- ly that the aims of the Women's
Conference at the Trade Fair should be fully supported, and that the Committee will be pleased to welcome the women delegates and to entertain them to the best of their ability." This motion was seconded by Mrs. R. H. Kote-

A fire which broke out about 2 o'clock yesterday morning at the Sam Ming towel factory, No. 104. Fook Wah Street, Shaukiwan, com- pletely gutted the premises, and destroyed all the stock. The alarm was raised by neighbours, and four fokls of the shop, who were asleep, were decidedly lucky to make their escape. Four fire appliances soon arrived on the scene, but the blaze had taken a strong hold on the building. The fire was eventually got under control within an hour.
