BRITAIN TO LEAD?
In World Currency Stabilisation
London, May 18.
With reference to the suggestion that Great Britain should take the lead in promoting immediate world world currency stabilisation, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, Chancellor of the Exchequer, spoke at some length at the annual bankers' din- ner in London to-night,
If there were to be a return to the gold standard, he said, it could only be by satisfactory settlement among the great countries. It was useless to anchor the ship if the anchorage was always shifting, he declared. It therefore seemed
futile to attempt stabilisation" un- less there were prospects of its permanency.'
"Stabilisation is one of our ulti- mate objects. We shall continue with that end in view and shall not hesitate to act when it is like- ly that action will have a useful result," he added- Reuter,
