Moscow, May 14.' ̧ . During the dinner given in Laval's honour by the Foreign Commissar, Litvino, the latter stressed the added importance gained by the French statesman's visit through the fact that it Immediately followed the conclu- slon of the Franco-Russian pact which was thus confirmed.

Pointing out that the pact negotiations have been conducted by three French Foreign Ministers belonging to three different cabinets, Litvinoff declared this to be a proof that the pact idea had the approval of all classes of the French people. The pact's first characteristic, « said the Foreign Commissar, is thas its authors were animated by the desire that the necessity might never arise for its application, and secondly that it is not directed against anyone nor excluded anyone from joining It who really is interested in the realisation of peace. -

M Laval replied 2.5 follows:

"We have created .an instrument

of peace as you sal and this best characterises the pact. Two great States voluntally combined their

efforts, not only to safeguard their! own security but also to serve the general cause of peace. Our countries Ideals may not be identical but they are united by a strong link of love for peace.".

In conclusion. the French Foreign Minister warned the audience that responsible states- men must show patience and per- sistence as the road to the so urgently needed rapprochement of all peoples is Jonk and difficult

They also discussed the posal- bility of making their new treaty a means of concluding an Eastern European Pact of non-aggression, consultation and non-assistance to aggressors.

The conversations were describ.... ed as most frank and friendly.

WELL SATISFIED

The first stage of the "Laval Litvina conversations passed off well. All important questioras af- fecting international policy of both countries were discussed at a meet- Ing which lasted an hour and a hair this afternoon,

It is understood that both parties are well satisfied with the pro- gress made. The Soviet is parti- cularly gratified at. M. Laval's visit. which it considers evidence of a

Iesire to ensure pesca.

The Soviet, It is stated, will wel. come the collaboration of Poland, with whom Russia has already es- tablished a non-aggression, pact. and is ready to extend the peace guarantees on a broader basis.

It is felt that M. Laval and M. Litvinoff may do much to prepare the ground for a wide-spread peace movement, from the exten- sion of general security pacts to the formation of ari Eastern Eu- ropean pact.- Rower.
