MUDGUARDS
Repairing The Damages
(By Owner Driver)
Damaged mudguards "spoli the appearance of the car, yet the owner whose vehicle remains, ui- scathed is indeed lucky in these daya of" codgested 'streets and crowded car parks. «Mud¡näräs are perhaps the most vulnerable part of the whole car, and ever since automobiles were made in- ventors have been busy on the pro- blem of how to make them of” a material" which would be elastic enough to yield "to, a blow yet strong enough to withstand vibra- tion..
In my earlier days I used to grumble about the dimsiness of 'some mudguards. But now I incline to the view that the lighter they are made, within reason, the eas- ler it is to restore them to their original condition after some orie has dented them or scraped yards. of paint from their sides.
'Speaking generally, badly dent- ed and scratched' wings mark the careless driver, but not always. Last week I parked my car among hundreds of others, and found to my disgust that the nearside wing had been scratched badly by the car beside me when it had moved away. That was certainly cafe- lessness, but not on my part.
Paint Has a Thickness Once the paint or enamel has been removed from any part of the guard' there is thly one way to make a good job of the repair. It is not the slightest use to deposit back enamel over the bare metal, and to hope for a clean patch. Paint has a thickness, and you must have noticed that. after sim- ply coating the bare metal the edges of the originat enamel stand cut. The patchwork" is very ob vlous, although not so apparent as would the damage be had the ex- posed part been left to rust..
It is easy enough, however, to 'make a fairly good job of the re- pair. Rub down the edges of the original paint with a plece of glass paper until they merge smoothly into the bare metal. If rust or dirt is on the bare part remove it in the same way.
The total surface about to be treated must be perfectly clean. 'as that is the secret of good paint- ing, just as it is the secret of soi- dering. Cover with an undercoat- ing of fat paint and allow it to dry thoroughly. When dry rub it down smooth and apply another coat. Rub down again and repeat the process until the hollow is all- ed up entirely. Then apply the black enamel with a clean brush, and, when dry, wipe it several times with a sponge and cold water before taking the car on the road.
:
Fainting in that way resulta in a good patch.
Straightening Wing Flanges When the tips of the guards are bumped light the dalized usdally buckle outwards and remain, so. Do not attempt to knock them back in by hitting them with a ham- iner, as that. is the most certain way to knock off the endthet. In- stead, use a shifting spanner and two pieces of hard wood. Fisce one piece of wood inside the flange and the other opposite it on the cutside. Grip these in the jaws of the shifting spanner and lever the damaged part back into place. If you cannot get sufficient purchase on the spanner to move the metal slip a piece of tubing over the handle as an extension place..
The same method, but working in the opposite way, is generally successful. in pulling out fanges which have been knocked in,
Occasionally the buckling of the nange results in the tip of the wing remaining depres- sed, When this OCCTALS gets some one to lift up the tip and hold it while the spanner is being used on the fange itself. If you must do the job single handed use the lifting jack to fur-- nish the required upward pressure
on
the tip. Finally, remember that a damaged mudguard will almost certainly put the wing lamps out of focus and that these, must be attended to whenever mud- guard repairs take place.

NEW BUSES
Ordered For Penang

seater saloon buses with special low floor and rear entrance and equipped with pneumatic tyres As a result of the success which attended these vehicles, five similar buses were added to the fleat in 1929. As in other muni- cipalities, transport, in Penang. bas nab to be closely studied, Mr. Rogers the Chief Engineer, and the Consulting Engineers, Messrs. Preece, Cardew & Rider, came to the conclusion that a smaller bus than previously up- piled was desirable. Consèquent- ly, Messrs.. Ransomes have,, just completed two chassis to comply with the new specification, and these are suitable for 24 seater saloon bodies.

The bodies are being built by the Municipality in Penang: to drawings supplied by Ransomes. They will have an overall length of 21 ft. 7 ins, an overall width of 7 ft. 2 ins, and a small turn- ing circle of 47 ft. 0 ins, over the complete bas
