Later in the evening, all HM ships switched out their illuminat ing circuit and carried out a dla- play with their searchlights. With the co-operation of the military. the sky was literally transformed into day and the many beams that intersected one another in their various formations evoked con- siderable astonishment from the Chinese people, particularly those who had come from the; country specially for the occasion.
