CAPES ARE SIMPLE TO

MAKE

Taffeta, Tulle, Floral Silk

Or Organdie

While capes by day, are strict-y aly utilitarian for evening, they blossom out into the softest billowy affairs. Here are four designs which are both simple. and inexpensive to make, tak

1. Taffeta capes are approp- riate accompaniments, to the old-world picture frocks that are decorating our ballroom's this Jubilee year. You need a semi- circular plece of material 36 inches across the "straight edge to make a cape 18 inches" deep. A dart should be made across

·each shoulder from the neck to give the correct fit It will be necessary to enlist the help of a friend with this. The neck is simply edged with valvet ribbon which ties in a bow at the front and matches the one in the hair,

The cape can be neatly ham- med round or plect edged. To quilt the cape--and quilting is. very smart-cut a simffar shape

2. A diaphonous tulle cape tied with a demure velvet bow can be very lovely on a summer evening. Either tulle, 36 inches wide, or silk net, 54 inches wide, would be suitable. The cape la the sketch is about 36 Inches long, though any depth, even knee-length, is fashionable.

Two yards will be sufficient, Slot & Darrow velvet ribbon along one long side, and this. tles round the neck. The slots and edges are left raw. Alter- natively the neck can be ruch- ed to any depth ard the edges bound with ribbon. Spotted chiffon 38 inches, wide is another good choice.

. ስ .

3. One leading British desig ner favours the kimono-cape, This is really a pair of "outatze" Magyar sleeves, joined down the certre back and having a band of ruching from the wrist to the elbow.. You need two separate yards of material, 38in wide. Any floral 'slik looks well.

Join the pieces together along one selvedge to a depth of 18′ in. making a piece 2 yards long and 1 yard wide. Fold this in half along the length and join to- gether the raw edges, for 27in from each end. Along the fold cut a slit at the centre back in long, that is 34in on either side of the seam, and fold back the front edges to form revers, M the material is not reversible they must be cut off and sown on again on the other side.

1:

Sew a hemm round the waist and sleeves and have, the revers and back neckline plcotedged. Then ruche a band zin wide along the fold of the sleeve from the wrist almost to the elbow, gathering it up to the required length

嗳 A double cape in 38in. organdie, crinkled or plain, spot- ted or sprigged, can be very effective. The cape is made in a similar manner to the tulle one. The top tier is about 14in deep, the lower one 22 deep, so that 2 yards of material are neces- Bary

Cut into the appropriate strips place together in position," said gather along the top, or ruche to any depth. Cover the stitches with a piece of ribbon. The two edges should be whipped.

ROUND THE

SHOPS

Absolutely the gayest, smartest and newest in bathing suits to be seen, have just been received by Lane Crawford's, Such a wonder- ful selection to choose from, so now girls you must go and see them to realise how nice they are. The silk suits in the new Lastex ma- terial are to be had in many colours and look more like beauti- ful close fitting silk underwear for a trousseau than a swimming suit. Then there are the all-rubber bathing ensembles which include cap, bandanna, and shoes in the sandal stye are something new here. Also dozens of Kool-Tex and Krepe Tex sultan gorgeous shades and, latest styles needless to say back- Tesa some with skirts and others, without. One bright yellow sult with pleated trunks had flesh coloured tights to wear under the

shorta. Other one piece models had fish-net inserts either at the top or around the legs

MAIZER'S

Very smart silk dresses for, after- noon wear and some cotton "even- ings, which are so fashionable now. are what Maizee is expecting - by the next Mali.

SMART STRAWS

Reville is showing a very smart lot of straws in sailors and the new bonnet styles. She wants to remind her customers that she also takes orders for making dresses.

STRAW BAGS -

Eve has a lot of really nice as well as useful straw 'bags in all colours and "the prices are most reasonable.

WASHING VOTLES

Mayo tells me that she has just received a new consignment of washing voiles and cotton.

AS PARIS SEES THEM

If swinging folds could be cut from moonlight they inpuld look - like the gleaming fabric which makes the newest of evening capes vorn in Paris. It in stiff and thin as the odd glass fábrics, and is a reflecting tissue maile of art and pure silk. The cape silhouette means everything, in the French fashion parade, martly adding ita line to tailormades; the demure cloak with blower and skirts; the wrap with dresses-and so amus ing in its character for the eren-

·ing.

Styles are seen adopted from the coachman's cape, the gendemie cloak, the red-riding hood, and the ragged school cape." At a gather ing of chic women one evening! saw an ensemble of the stiff reán satin in white, the frock backless, -and-worn" with it a'transparent cellophane cape bordered with i band of the satin.

FOR THE BEACH

This is the time of the year when the fashion world looks to Its beach suits. Here are some of the latest spring models from Hollywood.

Two-tone sports suits are going to be popular. so Ann Sheridan, Paramount player in The Crusa des, is wearinog one in navy and white cotton broadcloth The blouse is white with a navy col-

Some of the prettiest dance frocks in the new collections are made of muslin Not elaborate organdie, sk muslin, nor some fanciful fabric with muslin as a "foundation, but the old-fashion-lar and piped pockets, and the

ed, stiff, dainty, spotted muslin which belongs to Edwardian and evan to Victorian days.

The dressmakers have made the very most of it and although the material is identical with that worn by our grandmothers the style of the modern dress differs in every possible way from that of fifty years ago. Instead of stimy starched folda there are softly falling gathers. Fullness is looped up with grace and artistry instead of being merely confined within an en circling cash, and the dress artists have evidently had in mind the idea of accentuating the simplicity of the material and creating a "country maid atmosphere.

Black muslin lightly: powdered with white embroideries is being worn by fair-haired mannequins at the dress parades The foun dation worn below, it is white siso, which gives it the effect of being very thin and

skirt is navy with white panels. Mary Ellis, featured in Para- mount's "Paris In Spring," wears a smart beach costume in aqua- marine cotton crepe. The divid- ed skirt and the halter top are significant of the Easter fas- hions, and a large beach bat in the same fabric but in a lighter shade completes a charming en- sembl
