THE FAR EASTERN PROBLEM

The situation in the Far East formed the subject of a debate in the House of Lords on Wednesday as reported in another column by Reuters when Viscount Peel drew attention to the fact that as the result of Japan having left the League and China ceasing to be a member of the Council, an entirely new situation had arisen and that the ties that bound Europe and the Far East so closely in the past were showing signs of weakening. The speaker went on to say that as Britain has had a long and in- mate association with Far Eastern affairs, she had the right to study the question more closely. Em- phasising that he deprecated any idea of hostility towards Japan and

A fishing boat of about 80 pleuls capacity was reported to have been pirated off Sha Tal in Bri- tish waters yesterday at about 1.40 m.

In his report Wong Cheung King stated that he was fishing of Sha Tal at about 12.30 B. 10.. when after Ashing for some time he heard shots fired and on look- ing in the direction"whence they came he saw that a three-masted Tunk of about 800 piculs, capacity was bearing down on his brother's craft which was `nshing ‘at a dis- tance of about three-quarter mile from his boat.

Later the junk had his brother's craft in tow and sailed away in the direction of Lin Tin. On board his brother's craft were three other fokis including his

My Readers, I hope I may call you my friends, you know the sort of stuff that I am made of. No shirk- ing, no sparing myself, no paltry struggling along the Primrose path of idle dalliance. Each question that I am asked to sift, each topic upon which I am ask ed to vast the searing searchlight of my incorruptable intelligence, tests the whole force of my remarkable » - powers. I am not a skrimshanker.

Small wonder is it therefore that the authorities have given me the commission of making a thorough in- vestigation of the RABIES epidemic that has sprung up among some of our prominent Colony Mules. With that quick grasp of the vital entity in any situation which has placed me in the position that I now hold. I snatched at the root of the whole problem. It was no use to interview the owners of the mules; they were far too involved with other considerations. It was' a barren quest to ask the Vets; they were too busy try. ing to cure the animals. No, the only really com petent authority to approach were the mules themselves. Accordingly I made an appoint- ment with the senior mule, a char- ming lady of advanced years who first fought in the Crimea. As I approached her stall, I confess I felt some misgivings, but she put her ears forward with a charming gesture. which entirely disarmed
