TIN CANNING
In Great Britain
The canning industry of Great Britain has made great progress In the last few years. Researches in every branch of industry that contributes to it. have solved many of the former difficulties and established canned foods in the confidence of the public. That no effort is being spared to foster this confidence is shown by the survey of this work published in the Bulletin just issued by the
International Tin Research and Development Council. The re- searches include the investigation of the effects of the different salls on the crops used, the con- servation of vitamins. the Im- provement of the quality of tin- plate, and many other subjects in which food producers, the manu- facturers of tinplate, cans, can- making machinery and lacquers, the Department of Scientide and Industrial Research, the Universi- ties and other research centres, and latterly, the organisation that publishes the Bulletin, are coll- aborating. Short articles from the beads of the various, research establishments tell in straight- forward language the comprehen- sive character of the work and show the prejudices against can-. ned foods to be groundless.
Fish Canning
The pea now ranks easily the most important among British canned vegetables as a direct re- sult of such research. A vastly increased acreage of peas will be required to supply the growing demand for this typically English vegetable. Figures are given for the output of canned fruit and vegetables in Great Britain, and the extent to which soap. beans in tomato sauce, meat, Ash, milk and cream are canned is indicat- ed. A hap shows the location of the canneries in Great Britain and is suggestive of latest possibl- lities in the West of Scotland and Cornwall in regard to fish 'can- ning.

Italy announces "two new pro- hibited areas, over which civil air- craft, must not fly. One on the Riviera coast 'adjoins the French barrier off Mentone, thus increas- ing from twenty-eight to fifty-Ave miles the distance along which the air tourist must not fly within six milles of the shore, a serious mat-Sunday, terror pilots of land aeroplanes.
The other barrier obstructs the route from Pisa to Rome," its cen- tre on the coast near Furbarà. It will compel plots either to keep out at sea, or to fly inland over hills 18.000 feet in height, and which are sometimes in cloud.
The Aviation Settion of the AA. the London Chamber of Commerce, and the Commission Internation- | ale de Navigation Aerlenne, are working hard to secure the aboli- tion of some of the barriers.
In Europe prohibited areas and restricted frontier paths are or- dained by nearly all countries, Bus Great Britain, on account of her insular position. has had less rea- son to impose artificial barriers, and an early "intention to proclaim a "corridon" by, which alone air- craft entering this country mest pass. was quickly abandoned: ex- cept as regards prohibited areas, such as naval dockyards and cer- tain regions of military interest, 'the air over our coasts is free to all, with the proviso that landings must be made at Customs air ports.
The Marseilles Route France is now willing to allow "our services to fly by way of Mar- sellles, but not to carry local trar- Ac. This, however, will be per- mitted if we agree to "pool" with them the traffic on this section.
A similar situation arose with Italy, and before British air unes were permitted to fly by way of Rome it was necessary to concede to Italy flying rights to Gibraltar, Cyprus, and Malta, and the right to fly through the Sudan to Eritrea and Somaliland.
British machines entering Brin- disi are now required to do" so on a fixed course of 273 deg. true, at height of 50 metres. But this is not an irksome condition; and as regards regular air services British and Italian relations are cordial.
It would take much space to all the instance Se catalogue Europe of restrictions to the free air transport passage of regular vehicles, and it will not be neces- sary to specify all the areas pro- hibited for military reasons, ob- viously such prohibitions are rea- sunable. When, however, the fron- tler air "corridors" are considered, reasonableness is not always so
