THE MAYOR WAS INSULTED
Because Premier Got Precedence
(Special Air Mail Service).
London, Feb. 16. Because the Prime Minister was given "precedence over the Mayor and Mayoress at a "Burns Night dinner at Swindon; the town clerk (Mr. W. H. Bentley) has sent a strong protest to the Swindon and District Caledonian Society.
"Swindon," he writes in his letter, has achieved the
unen- viable distinction of possessing a society which invites the chief citizen of the borough to enjoy Its hospitality and thereupon deliberately affronts and insults both the Mayor and Mayoress by refusing to accord to them the position to which they are entitled by long-established custom and by statutory provision."
Will Not Be Dictated To" The reply of the President of the Caledonian Society, Dr. Dar-- ling, is:
"Let me assure you that the. position arose neither through mistake nor ignorance. The Com- mittee of the "Caledonian Society refuses to be dictated to by you. or anyone else, as to the precise. position the Mayor should occupy at their dinner table."
Mr. Alfred T. Butler, Windsor Herald of the College of Arms said that the Society's action was- correct.
"The key to the whole situation is who is the host," said Mr. Butler. "If it were a civic fumé- tion in the Town Hall at which the Mayor was the host, then he would take precedence over the Prime Minister.
"But when he is only a guest he has no claim to precedence over the Prime Minister."
