New Rates Of Pay On March 25
(Special Air Mail Service)
London, Feb. 12.
New rates of pay are to come into force in the mercantile marine'as from March 25 next. Negotiations have been proceeding for some time post and decisions were reached re- cently at a join meeting of the Navigating and Engineer Officers' Panels of the National Maritime Board, and a joint meeting of the Sallers' and Firemen's and Cater- ing Department Panels
The applications submitted by the officers and men's sides were for the full restoration of the Inta "cuts" in pay which came force three years ago. The settle- ment, which was agreed to unani- mously, provides that one-quarter of the "cuts" shall be restored.
In the case of officers, the new rates of pay will (as hitherto) vary according to the size of vessel and certificate held by the officer.
In the case of seamen rated A.B. and firemen on monthly articles, where food is provided by the ship owner, the new monthly-rates of pay will be increased from £8 2 and £8 12s, to £8 6s, and £3 16s. 6d. respectively," Where mon are on weekly articles and find their own food, the rate for ABS and firemen will be increased from £2 10s. to £2 175, 6d. a week.

Miss Grace Fields has signed & two years' contract to make Hims for the Associated Talking Pictures Limited; of Ealing. It is stated Of that she will receive about £150,- 000, a record fee for any artist in this country.
Mr. R. P. Baker, joint managing director of the company, said that Miss Fields would probably make three films. One would be based on a story by J. B. Priestley and would be in a comedy vein.
"You may, take it that Miss Fields will receive more than Miss "Miss be sald, Greta Garbo," Gurbo would receive about £60,00
for each film, but she would prob- ably only make two films in the two years, instead of three."
Mr. Baker added that Miss Fields will begin work on her next pie ture in March. It will be directed by Mr. Basil Dean.
