THE AFFAIRS OF CELLINI

The Story Of A Great Lover, A Great Artist-The Most Charming

Rascal Of All Time

(By LEWIS ALLEN BROWNE)

The Duke and Duchess started with surprise when a beautiful

Benvenuto Cellini, a Florentine, was the greatest goldsmith of the 10th century. He was likewise a hot-tempered fighter and sa famous lover. After myriad adventures and dangers through, out Italy, he returns to Florence and does notable work for Aloe- sandro de Médici, Duke of Florence. Here he finds Della, his one real lane, a Lady-in-Waiting to the Duchess of Florence, but the Duchess is beginning to fall in love with Benvenuto, after her manner of falling in love with many a stalwart young man. Benvenuto also has many enemies, among them the chancellor, who, in a list of alleged offenders, presents the name of Ben- venuto for immediate hanging.

"Benvenuto?" Dake Alessandro exclained when Ottavanic read his name from the list of men to be hanged.

"Of all Ottavanio sald, unable to hide the personal note of 'hatred in his voice. "Benvenuto's crimes are the worst—"

Chancellor Ottavanio paused and glared at the Duke, who has ceased listening to him and was telling a servant to have one of the perfume bottles refilled.

Quite true, Excellency, one does not hang Borglas, but there are other means."

The officials all nodded in agree- ment at this, smiling some-what sardonically.

"This is his fourth, Excellency." "Oh well, who was the foolish fellow who crossed him?”..

"Not A mere fellow, your Ex- cellency, but a nobleman of Venice!"

Duke Alessandro scowled. This was „than he thought.

Ottavanio stepped forward, still scowling, addressing the Cardinal. "It is not possible that His Emin- ence speaks i self-interest. Is it not true that the golden chalice which Benvenuto Cellini is making for you is but half finished?” ›

"That does not enter into it, Ot- tavanio!" the Duke cried, angrily. "I have said that Benvenuto will be punished."

Serving men brought a writing board, pen and ink, and Ottavanio, highly pleased that at last he would be rid of Benvenuto Cellini, gmiled his delight.

The Dake took the paper, started to affix his signature and glanced at the list, this time he saw the name of Benvenuto. His mind had been so far afield when Ot tayanto read it that hadn't occurred to him that it was his favourite goldsmith:
