Work on the construction the projected steel bridge across the Kan Klang (River) on the Yushan-Pingsiang section of the
Cheklang-Klangs! Railway, in " central Kiangs, has been started.. under the Joint auspices of the Klangsi Provincial Government and the Kiangnan Railway Com- pany.
The bridge spans a distance of 500 meters. It is being built at a cost of $1 million and 1s to be completed before the end of the year.
To institute direct train service between Haugehow and "Nan- chang, provincial capital of Klangs, as soon as possible, the Cheklang-Klangsi Railway Ad- ministraction has ordered the completion of the Yushan-Nan- chang section of the line by the end of September so that service may be inaugurated on National Independence Day (Oct.10). The order requires that the road-bed be completed in the spring and that the laying of rails be started in early April and nuished be- fore Oct. 10- Kuo Min.
SOOCHOW-SHANGHAI HIGHWAY

Plans for the construction of the projected Souchow-Shanghai Highway have been worked out by the Klangsu Provincial Government.
The road will start from Soo- chow and pass the towns of Kuanghull, Welkuatang, Weiting. Chenylchen, Kunshan (Quinsan),.. Hisachiachino; Anting and Huang- tun to link up with the" Nan- hslang-Shanghai Highway. It will be 70 Kilometers long, bullt parallel to and on the southern side of the Nanking-Shanghai Railway and from one to five kilometers distant from the line, " The entire road is to be completed by the end of May.
The Municipal Government of Greater Shanghai will be respon- sible for the surveys on the Shanghal-Quinsan section and the Kiangsu Provincial Govern)- ment for the Quinsan-Boochow section.
The cost of construction is es- timated at $700,000. The ex- penses for surveys and construc-" tion of the Shanghai-Quinsan. section will be borne by the Shanghai Municipa] Government; the Quinsan-Soochow section by the Klangsu Provincial Govern- ment... 'Kuo Min.

the Ninghsia-Paotow (Sud- yuan) Highway project has now proceeded as far as the territory of the Ordos (Yeghe Jo) League in Mongolia from Ninghsia city. A distance of over 200 1 (about 70 miles). With the cooperation of the authorities of the Ordos League, work will be pushed for- ward to the Sulyuan border. This section is expected to be completed rapidly as most of the way is level land;"

The Highway Communications Commission for the three prov- inces of Kiangsu, Cheklang and Anfwel and the Municipalitles of Nanking and Greater Shanghai held meeting at the premises of the Cheklang Provincial Depart ment of Reconstruction. yesterday. Mr. Chao Tsu-kang Deputy-Dir- ector of the Highway Bureau of the National Economic Council and member, of the standing Comittee of the Commission. presided.
It was decided that "the use of the charcoal gas engine for omnibus service, and the pro- duction and transportation of charcoal, be encouraged. The Provincial and Municipal highway authorities will be instructed to purchase two cars driven by char- coal-gas engines for trial on their highways
The question of providing a re- pair service on the Nanking- Hangchow and Shanghal-Hang- chow and other highways in the vicinity of Shanghal will be left to the Cheklang Provincial Gov- ernment and the National Good Roads Association
With regard to the measures for unification of automobile licence fees, the meeting decided that the delegates compile a table showing the charger in their respective provinces or münteiral- ities for submission to the next regular meeting

A number of members of the Institution of Electrical En- gineers in London were present at a meeting held to hear a paper read on "Ldits" by Mr. C. V. Du Mars.
In the course of his paper, the reader quoted huge figures to show the extent to which lifts were used in New York and the small percentage of accidents that happened compared to other transporting vehicles.
The figures showed that some three million more people are -served daily by elevators in New York City than are carried by all the horizontal transfer systems. combined-including subways street cars, elevated trams, and. buses. Some 12.350,000 persons travel dally in lifts, while 9,000,- 000 are carried otherwise.
Casualties caused by lifts in New York showed one fatality for every 285,000,000 persons
carried, and but one injury per 39,000,500. In other public trame fatality Is one in 14,000,000 and injury one in 88,000, or a ratio in Zavour of lifts of nineteen to one, and 800 to one respectively,

Messrs. The British Thomson- Houston Company, Limited, Rugby, have received the order for the electrical equipment in con- nection with the conversión of the Fort Jackson and Manly Steam- ship. Company's double-ended for ryboat Bellubera to Diesel-electric drive. The Bellubera is one of six double-ended passenger ferry steamers running in Sydney Harb- our. The propelling machinery will operate on the BTH, patent- ed controlled current system, method employed on the ferryboat Electric Star, now running between Hong Kong and Kowloon The equipment will include four 5- cylinder. 2-stroke, 400-450 bhp. Harland and Wolf-Diesel engines, "each coupled to a B.TH, direct
current generator rated-at, 320 kW, four propeller motors, each rated at 851 h.p., at 790 r.p.m., and gearing with Michell thrust blocks, lubricating-oil pumps and bridge ́control stations.

Messrs Ruths International Accumulators, Limited, have sec- ured several important orders Germany, Russia, France, Italy, and other countries during

the present year. One of the most important is for the City of Ams- terdam, where the municipality is now installing a large plant of six Ruths accumulators' at the Nord electric power station. The erec- tion work is being carried out by Messrs. Machinefabriek Gebr. Stork, Hengelo. The plant is to be used for covering the peak load and will act as a stand-by, provid- ing 15,000 kW of power for 45 minutes. The plant will be in operation during this winter.
Messrs. Hick, Hargreaves and Company, Limited, have recently secured contracts for a 50,000-kW
surface condensing plant with auxiliaries and a closed-feed
system for the Ironbridge gener- ating station of the West Midlands Joint Electricity Authority, 30,000-kW surface condensing plant for the Northampton Electric Light and Power Company Limited; and a large central evaporating "plant for the Klip power station of the Victoria Falls and Transvaal Power Company. Other orders include a 1,000-kW pass-out furb- ine for Messrs. Bast Lancashire. Paper Mill Company, Limited, a fourth repeat order for a 1,500-kW turbo-alternator for Messrs. Eng- lish Sewing Cotton Company, Ltd, Belper, and a 10,000-cub. ft. per minute turbo-compressor.""
