HONG KONG'S BRILLIANT

HOCKEY SUCCESS

Goal Scored In Extra Time Against Shanghai

ADVERSE GROUND CONDITION

"An exciting match packed with thrills" would be an a0- curate description of the interport bockey match yesterday be- tween the Hong Kong and Shanghai ladies,

The match was played on the ground of the Hong Kong Football Club, but owing to the slippery condition` of the field, the venue proved distinetly unsuitable. At, half time members of both teams discarded their rubber shoes, some preferring to play in their socks and others in their bare feet,, but neither

measure prevented them from skidding all the time.

fast and furious "throughout, but the tit-bit of the whole match was seen when extra time, (ten-minutes each way without rest) was played. The interval arrived with honours still even, but in the second half, Margaret Woolley, Hong Kong's centre forward, gave the Colony the lone goal that meant victory.

Hong Kong defonded the Club end and Shanghai the Morrison Hill end when the game commenced. Shanghai was early on the offensive, and the pressure against Hong Kong was only relieved when.J. Raeburn shot wide of the goal. At the other and Hong Kong's forwards tried their best to pass Bomko and Victal without much

- success.

Supporters of the Hong Kong team had many anxious moments when Collaco and C. Nichols brought the play into Hong Kong's goal ares. Two long corners were forced but ultimate ly Irene Woolley cleared.

A concerted movement between H. Kail and M. Smith enabled Hong Kong to get within shooting distance of the Shanghai goal, but Victal clear ed. Hilda Collaco was again respon- sible for bringing play into the Hong Kong "danger zone" but once again Irene Woolley cleared.

Opportunity Missed

Following a ding-dong tussel in wid field, Hong Kong had a glorious op portunity to shoot when 6. Dalziel and M. Woolley had only the goal keeper to beat after going past the backs, but a misunderstanding be tween the two players resulted in E. Bloomfield clearing with a beautiful

sbat.

A little while later, it became Shanghai's turn to curse their luck, for A Collaco sent in a shot that left everyone gaping. The ball, however,"

Shanghai Routed

WHOLE TEAM DISAPPOINT

All roads and traffic on Monday led to the Hong Kong Foot- ball Club Ground and a record crowd estimated at over 10,000 witnessed the defeat of Shanghal at the hands of Hong Kong by 7 goals to 1 in the interport football match.

There was a large and distinguished gathering present and the players of both ports were lined up prior to the kick off and were introduced to Sir Thomas Southern.

The Band of the Lincolns Regiment rendered selections prior to and during the interval of the match.

Two quick goals in the first five minutes of the game spelt disaster for Shanghai and although two penalties were awarded them in the first half only one was converted,

The machine like precision of the whole Hong Kong team had the Northern boys covered from A to Z and they could do. nothing. Shanghal, in other words, found Hong Kong at the peak of their form,
