KACHEK NOTES

January 28.

Chinese New Year season is ap-. proaching and markets are crowd- ed. January 14th to 18th were considered lucky days for wed- dings and red bridal chairs were much in evidence. Prices of pork and other foodstuffs went up be~] cause of the demand, but no buffalo meat or beef was on sale in, Kachek. for several days. It seems that the taxes were sudden- ly increased so much that the but- chers simply decided not to kill any animals. A week later meat was on sale so adjustment must have been effected.

It has been customary to load the touring cars plying between Kachek and Holhow with eight to ten passengers and some 2000 cat- ties of freight. Recently Hothow authorities decreed that a maxi- mum of only 1500 cattles of freight and four passengers could be car- ried, principally on account of wear and tear on roads. Kachek car- owners got together and made an agreement among themselves that passengers must purchase tickets at $3.00 for

one way and that cars should make the trip by scheduled turns. This penalizes the better cars, which can make the trip to Holhow and back in one day easily, and sometimes make a round trip and a half, but is an advantage to the slower ears. All rules are broken though when a steamer lands scores of passen- gers in Holhow who are returning from the South Seas, and a steady stream of cars pours into Kachek, each so loaded down that actually the cars themselves are not visible. Conversely, when a coolie steamer is advertised to leave Eolhow for the south, many men and women It then happened that a Russian wil be seen walking calmly along who had been watching another the road north of Kachek, coolles game walked by.
