Spring Colours And Materials

Many of the new woollebs for the spring are of flannel weight and texture and many have a "chiné or moiré" effect obtained by the clever interweaving of two. colours. There is a great variety. of wool "crêpes" with a rough pebbly surface, and Ughtweight wools have a Elub indsh giving the effect of stripes. As the "ensemble" will be an im- portant feature of 'spring models. woollens are shown in two weaves of different weight, the lighter to be used for the dress and the heavier for the accompanying coat. There are Combinations of three weaves for sportswear, Euch as a plain mixture for the coat, a patterned mixture for the skirt, and a jersey woven from matching threads. Other new spring, woollen materiais show in- v teresting combinations in their weave,, such as wool combined with artificial Abre, wool with linen or cotton; or wool with fea- ther, camel' half, or angora. In Eome cases three media may be combined, as in an open weave of linen, wool, and feather.

Donegal tweeds are, used for travel and practical sports suits They have a somewhat smooth finish with a pattern of plaids or checks, or irregular diagonals with bright yarn flecks. Lighter weight suitings for southern wear. are woven with a raised ridge and will be used in goft sweet pea shades. There are dress-weight woollens of soft angora in bril- Hant sports colours or in dull pastels They may be woven with stripes or dots or with a slightly raised corded effect.

Blue, as usual, will be the best colour for early spring. There is navy as well as a clear brighter blue, and a violet toned dark blue which is new and becoming.

is still Black

important. The effect of grey is given by black and white or by grey and black 'mixtures in woollens, and in. lighter mixtures in flannel ör jersey. It is new to combine two clear shades of grey in a light and dark tone. Belge will be seen for top coats of wool over plaid -or-printed dresses Far sports

wear rusty and coppery browns look well. There are also rastur tlum orange, a bright red with - a yellow tinge, and a WRITT

golden yellow,

There are new mixtures of silk and Linen yarns which make good sports dresses. Some have multi-coloured slub effect and others a herring-bone and open- mesh weave, Others again in heavier weight ik have raised stripes, which match or contast with the background. For town wear, the newest silk prints have A the design printed on "matelassé,”. "crêpon." or "crêpe" with a rals- ed surface. There are also tie slks in p'aids, checks, and small geometrical conventional and designs. New taffetas have slub stripes woven in wool or silk or; self-puckered ridgesŷ'

For early summer there will be prints on dark grounds, such as black, navy, brown, and dark green, and also on mole and black tulip. There will be many two tone printe in conventional, and geometric patterns and widely spaced floral designs in white or very pale pastels on dark grounds.

ROUND THE

SHOPS

LANE CRAWFORD

Now that most people are giving cocktail parties the announce- ment that Lane Crawford, are showing sonia delightful cocktall gowns this week will make most women-Falk curious until they have seen these models. I must say that not only are the dresses smart but they will act for two purposes-especially the emerald green crepa model in the tunic style with the bustle at the back and finished off with a corded girdle. Another very pretty one was in turquoise blue with sequins of collars and cuffs. The one that attracted my attention was a snappy model in Tangerine, and the mustard, crepe with the new. ruffle neck, with a diamante collarité, was admired by quite a few.

MALZEES

The social season is in ful swing and make-up is more im portant than ever. Several people I know swear by Rubins- tein's Beauty 'Preparations, and I would recommend all those who are doubtful about their beauty box to call in at Maizees and get a few hints, about this marvellous preparation. Helena Rubinstein's powder sults all textures of skin. as she has created a powder speci-

ally for a dry skin, a powder specially for normal or oily skin, powder

the that will not clog pores, and is perfect in quality,

texture, and colouring. It may be had in a variety of shades, Try once and you will always use Ru- binstela's.

MAYO'S

Are very busy this week making spring hats to order and most of them were very attractive. They have a lot of new fabrics in stock All this in a variety of colours. should interest those who want new has made.

EVENING COATS

There Has never been a season when the" little coat has been sO.. much worn and has proved so useful, An old-fashioned dinner gown, provided its skirt is pass- able, takes on a new lease of life if a smart coat is available for wear with it, and many a simple satin or lace dress is made by its accompanying coatee.

Elaborate Materials

Think out the jacket with great care. The simply-made one of a remnant of silk or ring velvet is by no means the best choice. A luxurious material and a rather elaborate style will make it much more useful proposition, and

bring you .into the fore-front of well-dressed Deople. Lame is a very good choice so far as material goes. There is a new make which is best .. described as gold and silver, for the pale golden threads arem to be interwover with a certain number of silvery onea, and this makes the loveliest of short coats. It is very supple in texture so that "the folds hang gracefully-a most important factor in anything connected with evening clothes-

the fabric alone makes garment beautiful, so and attractive is it

CLOTHES THAT ARE COMING

Hats Give A Flair To Dress

Once again the exaggerated de- mureness of Victorian mödes and aggressiveness of Edwardian sty- les must take a back seat. The New Year witnesses a return to severe simplicity.

The smart modern woman has adopted a practical and individual scheme of dressing by day. All attempts at sensational clothes are kept for evening fashions. Our experts seem to be united on this policy.

English life in town and coun- try is well catered for to-day. English Women. require fag more changes in day garments, as they lead a more active life than for- eigners. This applies particularly "To" "country" "dressing."

The Country Classic

It is only of late years that Eng- lish women have realised how smart black can be for country Wear. The black jersey suit of the moment, with its zip front fastening for bodice and skirt, is the last word in perfect and se-- vere cut. To this house frock can be added a cut-away hip-length collar-less" coat to correspond, bound with wool-braid or fringe. quality and design. Dur-This looks well in the house, or ing sale-time

can be worn with furs for out- doors or under a big tweed wrap. This sort of sult has become prac- tically a classic and we shall see it reproduced in equal simplicity in navy, with a little belgə or grey" introduced,

in

it is not ne- cessary to pay an enormQUA sum to acquire really lovely ma-. terial.

Then there is a lamo which has a gold, silver, or oxydised founda tion, and into this is woven a pat tern in pastel colours. There is less metai gleam about it than is. found in the all-gold or all-silver lame. Indeed, until it is seen at close range it is frequently mis- taken for a material with a dull.. surface, But this matt effect is very charming and shows up pale colours well. A conten seen re- cently in this pale gold looked rather like deep cream satin un til closely examined, but the tur... quoise dots and tiny follage scrolls embedded, as It were, into the sur- face showed up more effectively than they would have done, pro- bably, on 'a richer surface}}}

Another Enitted model is in hunters green, with a hint of mauve stitchery in the square yoke, belt, and on the cuts which finish elbow-length sleeves. The skirt, which fits the hips tightly is on the shorter side.

There is a tendency to shorten all practical skirts but not to-in- terfere with dresses ones, unless to show the feet in the front and let drapery dip at the back. The movement is fairly new, but so far has not taken much hold, possibly because it is rather difficult and likely to become sensational. There are not many exaggerations that

last. Again they must be relegat- ed to evening clothes, except in the matter of hats. We shall con- tinue to be neat and quietly garb- ed for day."

Plunges Into Unknown

As for millinery, we take plun- ges into the unknown. The con- trast between the severe tailored trend and dressier types of head- gear has created a conflicting ele-. ment in dressing. I do not mean that we attempt aigrettes and ospreys with jersey and tweed, but we can, and do, wear a velvet be- ret, the smartest cossack cap of fur, a draped turban, and a piqu- ant felt tricorne with a sports dress, Such contrasts should only be attempted by the woman with dress-sense.

English girls are now out of uniform-that is to say, a beret

or a tricorne may be worn with ‹à with any style of dress. It is up to them to choose suitable fabric and style in sympathy with the rest of the toilette. With a black serge coat and skirt or coat frock the dressy Gibson Girl- toque is inost attractive.

In materials there is no mono- tony. All-wool weaves and knit- wear are delightful, colours are beautifully blended, and the glint of metal sklifully and lightly in- troduced, especially with the deep, dark colours, is fashionable.

Suk, and all the great kindred family of softly woven fabrics will be used in the lighter form of tal- loring. Cotton and linen in new and wonderful designs, will be simply fashioned in blouse-and- skirt styles, worn with elaborate belts and accessories. They will

be crowned by old-world bonnets and decorative but sparingly trim- med fabric straws in pastel shad- ings.

Wild Sea Green

Among the new colours, wild sea green, magenta brown, and an Indian red are fashion pointers: These somewhat eccentric colours provide a smart new touch to fas- hion. They should be restricted" to hats and minor dress detalls,

No one is sure as to what will be done with shoes and stockings. Black lace and tulle worn with the fury evening frock, can be charming, but dark blue for day wear has a way of looking too purple. Yet I feel are that we have been neutral for such a long time in the matter of stocking shades that a change is ind ated in this matter.
