CANTON TRADE PROSPECTS

(From Our Special Correspondent)

Canton, Jan. 24. Firecracker business in Canton has shown some sign of improve-

ment owing to the approach of the Chinese New Year when crackers are fired by superstitious people to drive away the evli spirit. There are big shipments from Canton to diferent parts of the province.

The export business to the United States has somewhat in- proved as a result of better busi- ness in that country This is the boom season for the firecracker business.

Sugar Trade Better There is a good demand for na- tire sugar. The price has ad- vanced by two dollars per picul It is used to make all kinds of Chinese swetmeat, which is con- sumed in great quantity during the lunar New Year. The tax on

native sugar is abailshed, although merchants making shipments have to go through the routine of re- porting the origin of the sugar. Its quantity and quality, and to submit the goods for examination. Outport merchants are buying Canton

native sugar which is cheaper than that produced else- where. The cheaphess of local sugar is due to extensive growing of sugar cane in Kwangtung.
