Derby Candidates

No Outstanding Griffins Amongst Contenders

The Derby griffins of 1935, as a whole, have not shown the same capabilities as the griffins of former seasons. There appears to be no outstanding pony amongst this year's candidates for the Blue Riband of the Hong Kong Turf, and from a racing Point of view, the event promises to be of interest, though. I don't think the time for the race will compare well with, the “A” Class time for a mile and a haji,

In the past few years we have been accustomed to such Äne. performers as Liberty Bay, Trentbridge, and Soldier of

Brižain among the griffins, but one would look in vain for a simṣar class of contender: in' this year's lot,

HEROD & PACIFIC HALL APPEAL

There are two. pontes kept over from last season, which might ac- count for this year's classic. I mean, of course, Trowbridge and Herod. Both are." good. Mrs. Pearce's candidate has been doing some very fine track "work, and though the feeling in some quar- ters is that this pony will not stand the distance, I personally think he will. Judging, from what has been seen so far, Trowbridge should find a, place in the Derby, if he does not win it. In any case, it would be as well to remember that Trow- bridge is one of the best pontes to training among the griffins of this year, and in the hands of Mr F Marshal, will be certain to ac count for some of the races, if the Derby evades him

Herod The only pony which the "Hem" stable kept over from their string of five last year, was Herod, We have seen what Gladiator and Lemberg could do. We have also had a good idea of the strength of Macaroni, If Herod is as good as one of these, he will have a big claim in this year's main classic for as I have stated, the standard is not too high and a pony of Gladiator's class will be hard to beat. Herod certainly has the eut of a very polished performer and is daily improving. He is being tralled In the right way too, and the experts are beginning to seri ously consider his chances in the forthcoming classic.

Soldier of Honour Soldier of Honour came down to Hong-Kong with a big reputation, but unfortunately he has not had the opportunity to "show" anything to the public so far, since he was not quite in condition to train un-. til recently. He is only doing slow

who seems to move very well in- deed. The pony is not quite ready yet and müch will depend on how he responds to his training in the next fortnight or so. Estover has a bit of quality about him; and for Ia short race, say up to a mille, he will be a danger to any of the other griffins. Diogenes, and Rousseau

Mr. Eu Toug Sen has entered three of his five griffins in the Derby. At one time these ponies did not impress at all, but Rousseau is to-day attracting attention and I am not at all sure that he would. be in any way disgraced even in the best company, Diogenes too is quite good, and if these two im- prove at all in the meantime, they will have big claims when Derby Day comes round.

Last year, one of the "View" candidates (Bright View) finished second in the Derby. The "stable has entered Clear View, Forest. View, Harvest View, Night View and Plain View With so many candidates, it is obvious Mr. Li Lan Sang will be well represented in the Derby, though no one can ay with any certainty at this tage, which will carry his colours. Probably the choice will fall on Forest View.
