THE NEW AUSTRALIAN PONIES

Streamline And Derby

Day Show Promise

(By "MORNING DEW")

Although the opinion has ben expressed that the Astralian Ponies of this season will not aɔmpare favourably with those of

· 1934, yat,” I am not certain that on the whole the recent Kerivals, who will race for the first time in February, will fall very far short of their predecessors capabilities.

Admittedly," the 1934 consignment lowered sli existing records by wide margins. In fact, it es safely be said that they intro- duced a new standard of racing here, so far as Australian ponies are concerned. Able Amazon, Bronze Era, Nell Gwynn PÈRE I- doubtedly much higher in class than Nigh: Star and Woodland Star, former champions, but one cannot say with any tertainty that this year's consignment will not be able to give áll. 1st Year's ponies a food run.

GOT THAT A GOOD SPRINTER

Aitnough forty Australian ponies arrived in the Colony last season, less than thirty have been enter- ed for The Sydney Maldens and the Rooty Hill Derby.

There are three ponies which appear outstanding in this year's lot. They are Streamiine, Derby Day and Got That. Earlier in the training season, I would have plumped on Got That as the best, for this noble-looking chestnut of Mr.Seth's (measuring 14.3) appears to have the makings of a dyer. I am not so sure of his staying powers, and while he may be a a good thing for the Maidens, I am not to sure he will be much of a danger in the Derby

Streamline

Streamline has been acclaimed by the fans as the best all-round performer to date. He is a brown pony of 14.2. belonging to Mr. E Hosie and seems to like the rac- ing game. His training times all point towards the fact that he is a pony of quality and no one can doubt that this, pony is likely to prove a second Able Amazon. am sure we will hear very much more about Streamline before the Annual Race Meeting.

Derby Day

I

Very appropriately named Derby Day, Dr. S. N. Chau's bay mare, is one of the best of this year's im portations. He is 14.3 and can be fully depended upon to give his supporters a good ran for their money. Derby Day is considered In some quarters as being every; bit as good as Streamline and it is reported of this pony that he had Derformed a wonderful gallop at the end of last year. He certain 19 has the speed.

Southern Cross Mr. Leong Kwok Cheong, the po pular owner of Cavalcade, has

drawn a very nice Australian can- didate this year in Southern Cross. Here is a pony who will pay a good big dividend if she can manage to win, for Southern Cross is not much in the imelight, principally perhaps because it is not how given any very hard work to do. If one were looking for quinders in the Australian races, Southern Cross should be the first one to be picked on.

Vixen Te

I like Mr. Tinson's Vixen Tór, a brown mare of 14.2 This pony will surely do well during

and while I would not with Abie Amason or even with Streamline, I am one exu say that she will be sure to win races during the Extra Reason, Le pot at the Annual Meeting.

vices of Mr. F. Marshall, who was here Inst season and who scored. So man? successes during his briet stay. The stable has some very good poples. Mr. D. S. LI, the Idol of the Chinese racing fraternity will be here again to ride for Messrs Kong Bros., Mr. Leo Frost will be back in the saddle and will take charge of the Dunbar' can- didates Mr. H. C. Pi, who rode so many brilliant finishes in Hong Kong towards the close of the 1934 season will ride for the "View" Stable. Mr. Ho Kom Tong. I un- derstand, is entrusting his can- didates to the hands of Mr. Hol gate of Hankow. There are rum- ours that Mr. Li Shiu Pang's string of ponies will be taken care of by Mr. Y. 8. Chang, but of this I have so far been unable to get any confirmation. Mr. V. V. Needa will be seen here again for he is going to look after Mr. Eu Tong Seng's griffins Mr. B. L Tao, & new- comer from-Hankow will ride for Mr. Lf The Fong.

Of the local jockeys, Mr. Delta will have plenty of mounts as he wil (even if Mr. Chang des for the "Soldier Stable) be much in demand. Mr. Heard has a very long string of ponies to select hi mounts from and the sar is true of Mr E O Butle Botelho will zidé, number of subs, the didates of Messrs Grayburnir, Behr Proux will ride for Messrs and will be sure to have his hands
