PROGRESS IN HUPEH

Plans For Improving Improving Means Of

Service

'Canton, Jan, 4.

Plans for improvement of the railway service on the southern section of the Canton-Hankow Ralway during the 24th year (1935) have been mapped out by the Railway Administration.

These include the construction of a railway workshop at Hal- chun, "northern Kwangtung, lay- ing of double tracks on the Hsi- chun-Wongsha section. renova- tion of Bhluchow' Station, com-

pletion of the telephone system along the line, and' inauguration of the Shiuchow-Chuchow (Hu- nan) Section during the year.

Despite the strenuous efforts of the "Railway Administration to improve the service, traffe on the section has not been as encourag- ing as was expected. According to Information from the Adminis- tration, the surplus for the past year (1934) totalled approximate- ly $1,300.000; this shows a de- crease of $300,000 as compared with the 22nd year (1933)- Kuo Min.

Nanking. Jan. 4.

Despite the fact that Hupeh was stricken by the combined scourges of drought, food and banditry. considerable progress was made in the reconstruction of the pro- vince during the past year (1934), particularly in the fields of high way construction, telephone in- stallation and shipping admin

stration.

Stands Unrivalled In Country

Nanchang, Jan. 7. "Highway construction work in Klangsi province has made 'süch remarkable' progress, it stands un- rivalled by any other province in the country."

Such is the impression of Mr. R. Coursin, road expert from the League of Nations, who has arrived here from Sian, provincial capital of Shensi, after a tour in the North. west. He came here via Harlan and subsequently inspected the highways in this province as far as Changshu, in the west, and Fu- 'chow, in the east as well as in cen..

Some Recent Orders

The most interesting feature in connection with the shipbuilding industry of Scotland during the past month has been the placing. of a number of new contracts: Clyde buliders secured at least 15 orders, although come were for smaller craft the Forth booked

The English Electric Company, Limited, Stafford, have received two orders for öll-engine generat- ing plant. The first for the Kut Barrage. Iraq, comprises two of the firm's 3-K type Diesel engines, each developing 150 B.H.P, at 600 r.p.m. Each engine will be direct coupled to a 100-kW alternator. generating three-phase power at 440 volts and 50 cycles. The other order, which is in connection with the Assiut Dam reconstruction, Egypt. is for three 8-K type Dle- sel engines, each developing 300gures to date 54 vessels of 127, BHP-at 600 rpm. Each engine will be direct coupled to a 200-KW. 500-volt direct-current generator.

Both orders include pumps and other equipment, and accessories.

MODERN SEWAGE

PUMPING

A Notable Installation Near London

Considerable Interest attaches to recent extensions having a capacity of 2,000,000 gallons of sewage per 24 hours at the Byegrove Road Sewage Works at Mitcham, near London, belang ing to the Wandle Valley Joint Sewerage Board. This embodies the latest scientific principles for the pumping of sewage, both, screened

and unscreened, by means of automatically controlled. motor driven centrifugal pumps.

The Wandle Valley Board deals with sewage from a number of urban districts in London which include Mitcham Merton, Mor- den, Beddington, and Wallington. The present extension is the second section of the work, ori- ginally decided upon in 1922, the "Arst section having been completed in 1925, with a capacity of 3,000,000 gallons per 24 hours. of

The sedimentation tanks it may be stated are 6 th number and have a total capacity of 1.334,000 gallons, about three times the normal dry weather re- quirements, while the sedimenta- tion is finished off in 6 secondary upward flow straining tanks of 134,000 gallons total capacity:

Extending Telephone Network..

With regard to telephone pro- gress, altogether 51 cities and towns along the various highways in the eastern, Western, central ́and northern parts of the pro- vince have been linked up by long-distance telephone. The to- tal telephone network embraces 2,520 kilometers. The installation of telephone lines in southern Eu- peh has also been completed, but due to destruction by the ban- dits it will take some time for repairs,

Great Improvements has also been made in shipping adminis- -tration-in-the province since the

Provincial Government took over": supervision of the private-owned

steamers with a view to safeguard- ing shipping. .In addition to the Wuchang-Hankow, Ferry service, and five other shipping lines, and 12 wharves operated by the Pro- vincial Government, a total of 90 private-owned motor boats, 57 steamers and 19 charcoal-burning boats are now under the direct control of the Provincial Depart ment of Reconstruction

Besides the 12 wharves operated by the Pronvincial Government, over 100 wharves have been open ed along the shipping routes, Over $,800 passengers utilise the ship-

An Informal luncheon was given by Iron Paving, Ltd, in connection with their exhibit and demonstra tion at the Public Health Exhibi- tion. Mr. R. Hulme, the chair- man, pointed out the main ad- vantages of iron roads, and, with Major. F. Small, answered ques

tions,

The system referred to is of patented design and is known as the Tri-pedal Unit System Trian- gular blocks of cast iron make up

themselves a surface reminiscent the surface of the road, having

of a tyre tread and consisting of diamond-shaped studs. The ad-

vantages claimed by Mr. Hulme

for the surface are, non-skid” properties, "nonsplash" owing to the water draining away below the studs, no grit necessary since the road is already non-skid (grit

on a road blocks, the drainage aystem) no tar spraying, dustless, no maintenance, and practically everlasting.

Replying to a number of ques" tions, it was stated that there was little possibility of rust; allowance for expansion, was not necessary since the Iron was only exposed to the air on one side tramlines, for instance, willke railway lines, do not allow for expansion; the cost would be about 148 to 16s. per square yard of iron surfacing. which was a medium price com- pared with other road surfaces. It was also claimed that wear on tyres was not increased, that trai- fic vibration was reduced, and that snow and ice clear quicker from it than from other surfaces. Iron roads have been experiment ally laid in various parts of Lon-... don.

Ships And Their Engines

That of all inanimate things, the ship alone has been given other than a neuter gender in the Eng- lish language is more than a philological curiosity: it is con- tinual testimony to the position that she holds in the esteem and in the hearts of the inhabitants of these islands.

By the sea and on the sea we live, and If the day come when

our ships no more "slog their pa- tient way across the Bay, face typhoons in the China sea, or pick their course twixt Scylla and Carybdis" "then will the end be not far away, eg,

To the engineer, the ship is the steamer, or, in these oleiferous days, the motor ship, and while the history of the steamship is far from being the whole of the story of the navigation of the seas, that history covers many chapters full of romance and high endeavour,

chanisms represented a great ad- vance, and a vital step was taken when the idea of replacing the Dar by the paddle-wheel was con- celved.

Reference was made in the lec- ture to an illustration of a boat with a paddle-wheel operated by man power, published in Verona in 1471. The idea was not lost, and various designs carried the

matter down to 1894, when Savery. of the Savery engine, produced a design of his own.
