Return Of The Hawkins

(Special Air Mail Service)

London, Dec, 19. HMS. Hawkins, Captain'T..S. V. Phillips, at present flagship in the East Indies will be leaving for Home on January 31 and is expect- ed to arrive at Portsmouth, March I. The Hawkins is due to pay off in March, as her present ship's Company Joined in September, 1932 She will probably join the Reserve, and the Norfolk will replace her as flagship in the East Indies.

Under the Treaty of London the four cruisers of the Hawkins class are due to be scrapped by Decem- ber 31, 1936. They are large vessels of nearly 10,000 tons, mounting six or seven 7.5in guns, and are there-

fore more powerful ships than the 4,290-ton cruisers with five sin. guns which must be retained to make up the British quota. As the future relative position is indeter- minate owing to the delay in ar riving at an agreement during the naval talks it may well be that the Government will have to recon "sider the disposal of four such use ful vessels. The other vessels of the clasa are the Effingham, Reserve Fleet flagship; Frobisher, cadetssea training cruiser; and Vindictive, in reserve at the Nore.
