FITTING RECOGNITION FOR LADY SOUTHORN

Colonial

"There is no one in the Colony who has done more for the better- ment of the conditions of the poor than that tireless worker, Lady Southern, wife of the Secretary, who has been awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Civil Division). The recognition is a fitting reward 10 her never-failing interest and unremitting work in the cause of social and charitable institutions in the Colony.

It was due entirely to the ID. itiative of Lady Southern that the Women's International Club,

of

which she is president, came into

now known as the Cheero Club. It may be recalled that when Mr. McPherson came to Hong Kong, the Y.M.C.A, here was altuated in rented quarters, whereas it is now working in five buildings of its cwb. with more than 3,000 mem- ters.

SOCIAL WELFARE

Publicity

(By Rev. T. FRyan S.J.)

It is a very obvious fact that the giving of anything, whether donation or service or mere sym pathy, to a deserving cause, is de- pendent in the first fastance on knowledge. There arises, there- fore, the question as to the best means of making known any great need or any work designed to help it Naturally there is no "best" means, but probably more internal wars have been waged In welfare organisations on the sub- ject of publicity

than on any ather. Every attitude has been adopted, from unadulterated "ballyhoo" to the reticence unknown Hong Kong) which goes so far as to keep the name even out of directories, so that it, sympathiser to know where is difficult for even the warmest donation should be sent.
