AUSTRALIA'S PROBLEM
The Care Of The Aborigine
Adelaide:
More than anything else, the aborigine needs the assistance of the white man in curing him of disease. That this is one of the most urgent problems whitch Aus- tralla has to face in dealing with the blacks in the far north of Aus- tralia is the firm conviction of Mr. Ion E. Idress, the Australian author, after many years of close contact with them.
Mr. Idriess is visiting Adelaide, South Australls, after having spent 12 months in Northern Australis. For much of the time he was in the wild Kimberley district.
The natives in the north of Aus- tralia, he said, take very little in- terest in what the white man does. but they are concerned with the white man's ability to cure them of disease.
ኋኒ
Ignorance of Hygiene
"In their ignorance of the im-. portance of hygiene and clean- Hress," said. Mr. Idrless, "the aborigines do not understand that diseases are contagious, but regard them entirely as a personal illness. The little Covernment hospitals on the west coast of Western Aus- tralia are teaching some of them, but men-hot necessarily doctors, but trained. orderlies must be sent out among them.
HEAD OF THE ROMANOFFS
Adventurous Career
(Special Air Mail Service)
London, Dec: 5.
Of the Royal guests at the Duke of Kent's wedding, the Grand Duke Cyril of Rusta, the head of the House of Ronianon, has probably had the most adventurous career.
During the Russo-Japanese War he was standing on the deck of the Petropavlovsk, the nagship of Admiral Makaron, talking to the famous Russian artist, Verest- chaguin, who wat sketching the Japanese squadron in the dis tance. The ship, struck a mine and blew up.
The Grand Duke, who was one. plement of 1.200 was at first of the few survivors of her com-
sucked down by the sinking vessel.
|
A dreadful noise of water and complete darkness overwhelmed me. I felt that I was going straight to death. I made the sign of the Cross and began to pray. It seemed that my last moment had come, as breathing- was getting impossible.
He was, however, a strong`swim- mer and managed to get to the surface and keep afloat till re- Bcued.

-The wild aborigine way the Moat wonderful specimen of the animal ក
with 1 clear-thinking brain in existence, declared Mr. Idriess. He had numerous good points, but regarded the white man as a perfect fool,
१।
Shrewd Mentality
When Mr. Idrless saw the real wild native tribe, perfectly happy by day, and singing themselves to sleep round their camp Are at night, with no worries of income taxation, electric, light bills, and tram fares, he began to wonder whether they had not a lot of com- mon sense.
Although just as crude as he was supposed to be; the aborigine pos- sessed a shrewd mentality of bla own, and had a wonderful know- ledge of all kinds of herbs and ve- getable foods. The native knew of more than 170 varieties of herbs they could eat, and understood the polsons, which had to be ex- tracted from them to make them fit for human consumption.
Mr. Tartess said that people in the south of Australia, had only a vague knowledge of the real n tive, and too prone to be astray by the conflicting opinions of, those who regarded the aborigine only from their own, often narrow. viewpoint.
