Crew And Three Passengers

Killed

Profound regret has been caused' in Holland and aviation circles at the tragedy which has overtaken the famous air liner flown by the Dutch pilots Parmentier and Moll in the recent ar race to Australia.

By a strange coincidence the Dutch heroes were among the guests at a dinner given in honour of Scott and Campbell Black by the Royal Aero Club in London while away in the Syrian desert the machine crashed, apparent struck by lightning, and was barat to cinders. The ner was on round trip from Amsterdam to the Dutch East Indies with Christmas malls.

All the occupants, which included the pile second officer, mechanic and wireless operator, and three past agers were killed.

..New York, Dec. 21. "Had any dissualification arisen from the fourth America's Cup race it would have applied to Endeavour and not Rainbow," de-. clared the Race Committee's report the submitted at a meeting of the New York Yacht Club. concerning 'Mr. Tom Sopwith's protest of Septem- ber 22.

The Committee, after recounting the reasons given to Mr. Sopwith why the protests could not be con- aldered, declares that just before what was considered to be a foul the start the Committee observed

by Endeavour, of which full notes were taken in expectation of a protest from Rainbow. They were unanimously of opinion they would have had to disqualify Endeavour for failing to observe Rule 30 deal Ing with overtaking.

Explaining manoeuvering before the start, the Committee "declared that Endeavour failed to keep out of the way of Rainbow, who fibbed and luffed very smartly under the. ends of Endeavour's bows which appeared necessary to avoid a serious collision.

The Committees adds that it is reliably informed that the inter national character of the race alone prevented R >w protesting at the start owing to agreement between "Mr.. Vanderbilt and the Cup Committee that protests should be avoided as a matter of policy.

Amsterdam, Dec. 21. The air liner disaster, especial- ly in view of the almost venerable place the plane has taken in the Reuter. minds of Dutchmen since the England to Melbourne air race, has caused consternation and there is most profound regret throughout Holland.

It is pointed out that it is the Arst serious accident of the Royal Dutch Line in many years, but this does not hide the fact that national pride has been wounded. The country, however, finds some solace in the fact that the le race. beroes Parmentier and were not on board.-

Great anxiety prevails here, it being feared that the plane has been forced by heavy storm ta land in the desert between Jaza and Rutbah and that its radio, appar- atus has been damaged, British military authorities in Bagdad have promised to organise a search in the desert with airplanes and auto- mobiles immediately, but violent Moll thunderstorms so far have render-Reuter, ed a start impossible.

On receiving these reports. the Dutch Airplane company decided on Thursday evening to despatch a second airplane "Leeuverik" in order to endeavour to find the "Niver" and If so, to proceed to Dutch East Indies with the heavy Xmas malls carried by the misc. ing plane.-

CITROEN IN TROUBLE

Thousands To Be Jobless

Paris, Dec. 21. The Citroen Works are closing over the Christmas holidays, but will reopen as usual for throwing out of work 20,000 employees and dependents estimated at 50,000.

The attitude of the Chamber to Government assistance of private companies appears to be determin ed that Government, do not use public' money to aid. Citroen, but "financial experts are wondering how the maintenance of the works can be ensured without a Govern ment guarantee. The position is further complicated by the fact

that Citroen is in. arrears with taxation payments and the Gov- ernment itself is probably the larg est creditor.
