BRITISH SHIPS IN JAPANESE TRADE

The number of large European freighters under Japanese charter, loading here with beans or un- loading flour, is steadily mount- Ing.

The presence of so many ships Aying foreign flags in the harbour does not mean A proportionate amount of Dairen's oversea trade control: the

steamers

or

of foreign "tramp" motorships calling here are chartered by the leading Japanese drrms of Dairen or Japan.

Some of the foreign freighters are chartered for a long trip or so but the majority are chartered for a year or a half year, The latest of such chartered ships to arrive here are the Norwegian steamer Aely" Bryn and the British motorship Houston City, now in port.

Timber From Canada

"We brought 532,800 bags (7,270 tons) of flour from Melbourne and Sydney, completing the trip from the latter port to Dairen in 26 daya" declared Mr. O. Aauensen, chief officer. of the Aely Bryn.

"We took timber from Canada to Australia In September and brought the four here. A little over two months ago, we were in Dairen, loading with beans for

Shimizu, Japan. From there we crossed the Pacific to Vancouver in ballast.

"Yes, we are under charter to the Yamashita firmi, and are kept busy moving from port' to port, despite equatorial typhoons and Pacific storm. After unloading

the flour here we shall load with beans for Japan again. The Yamashita people are airanging our programme after that short trip.
