Prizes Advocated As Encouragement

Landan, Nov. 15... The offering of prizes similar to those in the recent air race to Australia for the encouragement of research in the fuel industry was advocated by Sir Hary M'Gowan In his presidential address to the Institute of Fuel.
"Does not the recent great air race suggest procedure by prize?" he asked.
Many people foresaw that because UBA was a great continent and also a great motor manufacturing country she would speedily develop Transcontinental mali service on a large scale.
Reviving Coal Demand "To-day in Great Britain," .con- tinued Sir Harry, there are first- class marine architects who main- tain that it is possible to build a ship without funnels and with a far better fuel performance than any- ing that at present sails the seas.
"What would happen if a "sub- stantial prize of £100,000 were to be offered for a ship to be driven alternatively by coal and off-when she coals at cheap coal ports she would fire coal and when she coals at a cheap, ol port she would fre oll?
"I venture to predict that a gesture of this kind to the fuel and shipbuilding Industries would evolve a ship which, judged by commerical tests, would put this country again In the forefront of the shipbuilding industry and re- vive a large demand for coat”
