Stoke Assumes Lead

The Arsenal made no mistake at home when they received Wolverhampton who were swamped to the tune of 7-0. Sunder- land shared points with the Wednesday, and Stoke, winning 3-1 against Preston North End, has assumed the lead on the strength of a better goal average.

Bolton and Brentford are still in the lead in the Second Division: Reading, winning at home, has taken the lead in the Southern Section from Charlton, who went under to Watford; Tranmere and Halifax, the leaders of the Northern Section both registered wins. In the Scottish League all three leading teams drew.

Paris, Nov. 13.

Capt. Frogé, of the Quartermas- ter-General's Staff at Belfort, & distinguished wartime officer, who carried his regiment's flag under the Arc de Triomphe after the Armistice, was sent to prison for Ave years by a Civil Court at Bei-" fort for espionage.

Stanislas Krauss, the Polish apy, who.was also on trial, was sen- tenced to a similar term of in- prisonment.

As soon as the presiding judge had

announced that the sitting was public, Maitre Jean Legrand Froge's counsel, made a short speech insisting that the proceed ings should be reopened in view of fresh facts which had been brought to his notice last week.

"You have a heavy duty to perform to-day," sald Maitre Legrand, addressing the judges. "Tragic events may follow your decision.

"You have no right to judge in such conditions. For months we have been a prey to the machinations of the French secret service. Are you not afraid that it will be said if you refuse a 'supplementary inquiry that in this case everything is crooked and suspect."

This is not the first time that bistoric cross has come to grief in the same way, Visitors to Alfris- ton usually noticed that the top part had been mended.

During the war three care-free Canadian soldiers froth the Cana- dian camp at Seaford tried to climb the cross together. Both it and they suffered severely.

The representative of this remote Asiatic nation. whose warlike qualities have made them famous in the past, declared that "the solution of the present difficulties lles not in arsenals and Rrmá- ments, but in a change in the outlook af those gulding the destinies of nations." He looks for "a brotherhood of man under the | Fatherhood of God." As for Nepal's policy towards British India, he quoted a phrase of

Sir Denys Bray's: "We have no policy, only friendship."

Sir William Birdwood, who has the distinction rare among Euro- peans of having twice visited Nepal, spoke with affection of Ghurka friends of his younger. days. He reminded his hearers that after the great Indian earth- quake Nepal refused to accept a penny of the relief funds raised in England, saying that "the needs were greater of Northern Bihar than her own. Nepal has already completed out of her own sources 75 per cent, of the neces- sary restoration work.
