THE ROYAL WEDDING

Its Splendour And Beauty

"ABBEY PLANS FOR THE SERVICE

The age-old splendour of religious ceremonis! will be superbly blended with the pomp of State, the magnificence of Royal hoa- ses and the devotion of the nation's representatives when

the Duke of Kent is married in Westminster Abbey on Nov. 29 to Princess Marina

The order of service has not yet been finally settled, hat it is possible to indicate the arrangements which will be made to en- due the occasion will all the dignity and beauty of which the re- sources of the Abbey are capable.

Gold Plate Upon Altar

The Dean Chapter are respon- sible for all that relates to the net ual solemnisation of the marriage. For the rest, the Abbey is handed over, as it were, to the Lord Cham- berlain. It is who issues invita- tions and arranges for the seating. of guests.

If precedent is followed, the Dip- lomatic Corps. Cabinet Ministers and former Cabinet Ministers will be seated in the stalls of the choir. The transepts will be peopled by famous men and women in many walks of life, and everywhere there will be the brilliance of uniforms," the glint of medals and swords.

YEOMEN OF THE GUARD The Sacrarium will be gleaming with its white-decked alter, upon which the magnificent gold plate of the Abbey will, in accordance

with old English custom, be dis played. On either hand will be the seats for the high ecclesiastics, the Royal Family and their guests. No fewer than fifty-seven members of Royal Houses will be accommodat- ed in the Sacrarium.

Further colour will be added to the scene by the presence of his Majesty's Honourable" Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms, in their scar. let and gold and their white plu- mes, and by the Yeomen of the Guard.

When all the guests are assemb led the King and Queen and the members of their family' will enter

their own procession and take their places near the altar.

Also in the Sacrarium will be the Archbishops of Canterbury and. York, the Bishop of London, and Archbishop Germanos, the Greek Orthodox prelate who has

the oversight of Princess Marina's co- religionists in this country. "At the great West Door, the Dean (Dr. Foxley Norris), the Canons of Westminster, and other function- aries of the Abbey will await the bride,

The procession up the church and past the tomb of the Unknown Warrior will be led by the famous Abyssinian cross of the Abbey. All the clerics will be vested in magni- fcent copes, and the Abbey clergy will be habited also in the scarlet cassocks proper to members of the Royal foundation.

The familiar exhortation of the marriage service will be read by the Dean, probably in the shortened form used at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of York.

At the actual plighting of the troth and the marriage the Arch- bishop of Canterbury will officiate. His Grace will then pronounce the first of the marriage blessings, ARCHBISHOP'S PRAYERS The Psalm which follows will like the rest of the vocal music, be sung by the Abbey choir, toge- ther with the Children and the Gentlemen of the Chapel Royal

The suffrages afterwards will be chanted by the Precentor of West- minster Abbey, the Rev. Cyril Armitage,

At the Altar, when the bride and bridegroom have advanced there, the remaining prayers will be re- cited by the Archbishop of York.

From the Altar also the Archbis- hop of Canterbury will address the newly-married" pair, and after- wards bestow the Church's con- cluding benediction.

The service over, the Duka. and Duchess and their immediate re- latives will pass into the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor, behind the High Altar. There, laid out on an osken table, the registers will await their signatures. The part les and their witnesses will algu the two registers belonging to the Ab- bey, and also the special register. of Royal marriages, which contains the signatures of practically every Royal personage in Europe during the last 160 years.

Later in the day, the Chapter Clerk of the Abbey will presum- ably secure the attestations of other witnesses, whose signing in the Abbey would unduly protract the time of waiting for the 15- emergence of the bride'” and. bridegroom.

All the members of the Royal party will leave by the West door,

processions with going in clergy.
