Committee Recommends That Expert Be Engaged

the

The report of the Commlitee appointed to consider breeding of plas and poultry in the New Territories chas Just ̈been published and the Committed is sailsfleg/thaj 'an important improvement in' the existing state of affairs could be antlélpated with every confidence; but,as a first and necessary condition of such an improvement they strongly recommend the engagement at the earliest possible date of an expert in animal industry.

The hands of such an expert, the Committee suggests, might be strengthened by the appointment of a small Farm Board -which might also serve to co-ordinate all the agricultural ac-

tivities in the Colony.

VILLAGE INDUSTRY TO STAY

The report states in part as fol- lows:

Pigs

The present Import of pigs from cutside the Colony is approximate- ly 350,000 per annum with a value at the slaughter-houses of about ten million" dollars.

Senterice of four months' hard labour was passed yesterday on Geoffrey FitzGerald Gilbert at the Criminal Sessions, when he plead-); ed gulty to three charges of em-" bezzling "money belonging to Arn-) | hold and Co., Ltd, his former-em-. players, between October 15' and 17. The SUMM involved totalled $14,000.

Mr. Leo D'Almada, jar., instruct- ed by Messrs. D'Almada Remedios and Sliva, represented accused.

No apprehension is felt as re- gards an adequate supply of food- stuffs for a very greatly increased local supply of pigs, provided cheap transport is available. Brewery and distillery refuse furnish a valuable ingredient; and there is a large surplus of unconsumed food- stuffs from the urban areas. Even if it became necessary to Import foodstuffs this would be economically sound in view of the high value of the grown pig.

We consider that, the breeding of pigs should continue to be a village industry from birth to three month old and later, and that it' is at this stage that support is most needed; but that encouragement should be given to well-placed plg- farms as private enterprises for the fattening process up to the age of 10 months when they are ready for

Accused opened an office in Bonham Strand East and his pro- greas with the business was indi- cated by the fact that since 1830 it had passed two million dollars through his hands, and, at the time of the offences, averaged a monthly turnover of $90,000.

"

Cloaking Another "In such a case, where all this money was passing through his hands, it was easy for him to get hold of it, but you will see that he acted more as a fool than a knaye and reaped no benefit at all from these sums," continued counsel.
