Showing At The Alhambra

Whistling, humming and laugh- ing, an enthusiastic audience left the Alhambra Theatre last night, unanimously declaring the new First National pleture "Twenty Million Sweethearts' delightful "entertainment, and attesting the arrival of a new romantic screen team which will probably be re- gistered among the great lovers of the cinema, Dick Powell and Ginger Rogers.

unique abilities as a comedian, and Po- well and Rogers, making musical love throughout the action or the fast moving and hilariously funny comedy, with, the Four Milk Bro- thers, and Ted Flo Rito's orchestra. and a remarkably capable cast in the supporting roles, "20 Million Sweethearts" will undoubtedly take its place as one of the outstanding hits o 1934.

Dick Powell is as brollant in this picture as he was in the great musicals of "wonder Bar," "42nd Street." "Gold Diggers of 1933" and. "Footlight Parade 1 Dot more 50. His voice has a quality of unusual warmth and colour while his personality is one of exceptional charm. He has been named "the man with the million dollar smile.

The titlan haired Ginger Rogers, who plays opposite Powell as his radio sweetheart, won fame both on the musical comedy stage and in such screen musicals as "42nd Street" and "Gold Diggers of 1933." In "20 Millon Sweethearts," she not only gives a splendid per- formance but renders her songs in a volee of rare and unusual sweet ness.

String Along With You," first sung

by Powell alone, and later with Ginger, is one of the Hveliest romantic numbers ever put out and is destined to be one of the outstanding song hits of the year. Other tuneful airs-by Warren and Dubin include “Out- for No Good" sung by Miss Rogers, "Fali and Warmer," a piano solo. by Ted Flo Rito and "What Are Your Intentions" sung by Dick Powell, to the accompaniment of Ted Fio Rito and bis band."

Miss Gaynor, plays the part of a young society girl who has always had money enough from her father, Walter Connolly, a rich automobile manufacturer, to do whatever she pleased, and who suddenly discovers that she has been everywhere and done every- thing. In order to learn more about Ule, Janet TOES to an employment agency and secures work as a kitchen maid. In spite of the fact that she has no idea about cooking or housework. Ayres is the chauffeur of the family with whom she finally finds work, and the two of them provide much fun for the audience

start when Janet tried to tell Lew something about an automobile. Having Invented a new type of motorboat, he is naturally resent- ful that a girl should attempt to tell him anything concerning gasoline engines.

The picture marks a departure from Miss Gaynor's usual type of rolo. Previously, she has always played straight romantic parts, but in Servants' Entrance", she blossoms forth as an able come- dienne and she reaches the heights of amusement in a very funny, sequence with Ned Sparks (playing the part of a sour-dis- positioned cartoonist), in which she finally ends up by scoring a perfect bulls-eye with a pie which she has tried to serve Sparks for dinner.

However, the picture 15 not straight farce, but the comedy is skillfully interwoven in a plot the meeting between concerning Ayres and Miss Gaynor and their subsequent romance,

Though a chauffeur by trade, Ayres is mechanically inclined and has succeeded in perfecting a new type of speedboat, the model of which he calls "Minnie". He is "Minnie," and up in wrapped until Miss Gaynor appears in his 11fe, the boat has been the subject of all his affections. But when kitchen he sees the pretty, new maid, "Minnie" soon runs a poor second.

- The two principals give one performances, combining romance with a touch of comedy here and there. which makes "Servants" Entrance " an amusing and thoroughly enjoyable attraction.

Mae West, the famous Para- mount star, whose next picture is BELLE OF THE NINETIES, ap- pears to have been responsible for one or two little Hollywood roman- ces in recent weeks.

The blonde star is, of course, the apostle of curves. and When she wrote the story of "Belle Of The Nineties." she wrote in a scene for

troupe of dancers who, without » being fat, must certainly be well- Founded.

When. Joan Blondell went to bas with Warner Bros. studios during the filming of "I've Got Your Num- ber," her latest picture, over the change of her screen, name, she kept the real reason secret.

Apparently, the wise-cracking

star wanted to be known as Joan

Barnes, her married name, Other stage and screen greats have used their legal name and had been very successful and Joans as the wife of George Barnes, ace camerman. wanted to be a wife first and a screen star second. At least, that is what the public thought.

It finally leaked out that Joar: was thinking of her sister Gloria, who is making her debut in “Har- was the old Teen," (a Warner Bros. funny result of years of close and intl-film); and wanted to make the tough climb easier for her younger mate study.
