"Shanghai. Oct. 30. Esikang, the large and sparsely- populated province in the distant Interior of China, lying between

China Proper and the Lama De- pendency of Tibet, after having been consistently neglected in the past by Government after Gov- ernment, which were principally concerned with fighting revolt and disorder nearer home, is at last receiving Its due share of attention from the present rulers of the Republic. Not being the source of revenue, but rather the scene of frequent attention only when some, unusually troublesome muddle had arisen which "

required to be Equidated through the medium of a costly punitive expedition, in order to prevent the disorder from spreading to the neighbouring province of Szechuen. Its "wealth consists mostly in its large herds of yak and sheep, while its other resources remain quite untapped in view of the inaccessibility of the region.

POLO IN THE PAST

The

Bad Old Days Past At the tea table Generallssimo Chiang spoke most appreciatively of the good work done by the mis- sonary body in China. He assured all that not only were the days of opposition and oppression passed, but that the time of mere tolera- tion was at an end. He said that under the present government, it would be the policy to give the utmost freedom to, and active co- operation with, the work of the missionaries. He explained in de tail the purpose of the New Life Movement. which he has been pro-

moting throughout the country. It is not a mere regimentation or disciplinary movement to control the people, but aims at the moral, cultural and social unlift of the masses. He called upon Mr. Liu to make use of the experience of the missionary body in promoting the objectives of the New Life Move- ment and asked the hearty co- operation of the missionary body
