Mr. Mackie, Your Excelency, Ladies and Gentitmen.-I regard it a very great privilege to have lald to-day the foundation stone of the new "Head Office of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank- Ing Corporation. It is a privilege, of which I could never have dreamed" when I first became s humble depositor in the Bant near- ly 37 year ago in Penang. I have been connected with the Bank in...... various places and shall probably continue to be a client for 'the rest of my days. However my personal association is of little moment and I apologise for even referring to it- I congratulate the Directors an their enterprise in building this new Head Omce in Hong Kong. In these days of dark depression it should help to institi a measure of confidence and foster the feeling that things are not perhaps so bad as is alleged. Further it af fords evidence, if evidence. be necessary, of the strength and the stablity of the Corporation. I say.' advitedly. "if such evidence be necessary for there can be no doubt that the stabilitz

snd strength of the Bank have stood 'the test of a long period of time.
