TRENTBRIDGE THRILLS CROWD

Punters who had backed Trenthridge heavily to beat Diana Bay in the October Handicap, the main race on the programme » on Saturday held their breath for thirty seconds as the favourite raced up the straight under whip and spurs in a great effort to overhaul Diana Bay who led into the straight by three lengths, The favourite Just did it in time, winning by a short head in one of the most thrilling finishes since the resumption of racing this season.

Favourites had a good day, and on fewer than five winners and sixteen placed ponies were nominated in the selections given by the "Daily Press on Saturday. Mr. Butler was the most successful jockey, riding two winners and two placed ponies and Mr. Proulx was next with two wnners and a placed moɛnt.

Diana Bay led into the straight three clear lengths ahead of Trent bridge and Mr. Heard urged the iron grey and used his whip to re- duce the gap. Just after the Dis- tance Post, he had drawn level, and game as Diana Bay Trentbridge proved his superiority. Even the whip failed to produce the little more out of Diana Bay that would have made all the difference. It was a most exciting finish. King's Justice was third.

Bruchin, was unplaced here. The winner who in his days was undoubtedly one of the best sprin- hers on the local course, proved to be too good for the field; when his weight was reduced to 145 pounds. He led all the way home, turning op 1.26.4 against which .even King's. Fancy who confirmed my statement that he is at the top of his form, could make no impres- sion Brechin did no's get well away, and the race was a good half way covered before his Jockey asked him for drieffort. The pony. however, could not make up the ground lost and hud to be content with fourth place, finishing well behind Soldier of Germany.

QUEENSLAND HANDICAP Nine starters accepted in the Queensland Handicap which fell to Bag Tor. Mr. Davis rode a fdent ruce here and while one pony after another set'out to make the pace, he remained comfortably within striking distance until the bend before the straight when he came through to win by a length and a half. Night Star finished second, dead-heating with Saucy Face who was prominent most of the way. Bronze Era" made the usual dashing display at the start, Mr, but was all spent before the race was hall over.

է;

The time for this age was not available, the omcial time for the last mile being 1.49.2, which in view of the fast times returned all round on Saturday, was on the slow alde.

I had a look at the ponles in the paddock before, the first race and if anything looked a winner. Elec tric Star certainly did. He was full of energy, and the race proved that he was easily the best in the fleld or seven, griffins which faced the starter, Macaroni and Spina- way, made the pace, followed by Soldier of China, Oak Bay and Electric Star, while Ribble, and King's Warden brought up the rear. WARRINGTON Warrington proved his mettle when he won the Bonham Handi- cap (second section) from Chival vous With The Bodega finishing third. Chivalrous was well placed all the way, while Mr. Proulx en Warrington took his time in the middle of the field. It was not until three furlongs from home that Warrington asserted hiraself and came though the field to dia- pute

the issue with. Chivalrous. For a moment it appeared as though there was going to be a very close ruce, but Chivalrous tired a hundred yards from home and Warrington won with a length and half to spare. The Bodega Just ousted Little Beauty from third place,

Valorous from the second pony.

The field was fairly big but all the favourites, The Tiger, Mond- plane and Valorous were well through the field. Wonderful Stag placed and did not have to 'wade and Bistre was hemmed in and by the time the latter got through

some of the nineteen starters, the race was almost all over. Wonder.

Yesterday the Craigengewer Cricket Cluti held their Annual At Home, and during the afternoon.. the anals of the Club's tennis handleap competition, was decid- ed as well as a Ave-rink game between bald-headed members of the Club and the rest.

The bowls match proved In teresting and an even struggle in four rinks. Coates however set- tled the hopes of the bald-headed members by his brilliant display. winning by a big margin on his rink.

At the conclusion of the sports, away Mrs. BW. Bradbury gave the prizes, while Mr. Bradbury in a brief review of the Club's sport- ing activities during the year, re- marked that the Club by winning the senior lawns bowls league again, had made history as they had won this shield seven times In the past ten years or so.

He thought that no other, club in the Colony can boast of such a large number of bowling en- thusiasts in their midst. They had fifty four playing members and were able to run three teams ir the local leagues...

Mr. Bradbury took the oppor- tunity of thanking all the officers of the Club for the work they had done during the year. and the ladies for the manner in which they had looked after the social side of the club's activities.

The prize winners were as fol- lows:-

CLUB SURPRISE THE

EAST LANCS GO UNDER TO

KOWLOON

Game Abandoned Owing To Rough Play

i

Saturday's League Football was featured by some sensational displays, both Kowloon and the Club who were expected to go under, winning their respective games against the East Lancs and the Lincolns, respectively.

Kowloon played better-football than they have done for some considerable time, Elliott finding his true form at last.

The Club algo experienced a change of play and, the inside forwards were seen to advantage for the first time this season, Howe being responsible for all 3 of the Clubs goals.

5

South China “B” further enhanced their chances for the Senior League title by defeating a weak St. Joseph's team by 2 clear goals.

Unfortunately for the Saints, Elms, their star left half, was unable to play owing to indisposition and this left a serious rap in their defence.

In the Second Division. South China, holders of the title defeated their most formidable rivals, the Borderers by 3 clear goals and so made sure of retaining their position at the head of the table.

The Lincolns had the better of the Eastern by the odd goal In three, while the Artillery brat Kowloon in a very pour rame by the only goal scored. The Young Indians' and the Club shared 2 goals, both penalties, while Baker of the former team was ordered off the field for foul play. The Varsity made a late attempt to outplay the East Lanes but went down fighting.

A precedent was provided in the Third Division when the rame between the railwaymen and the Club de Recreio was abandoned 11 minutes before time, the players having got be- yond control after a series of warnings. In addition Lee Hung-chuen was ordered off.

In the other Third Division games, wins were recorded by the Medicals the R A. F. and the Borderers.

Although the score may indicate that the match was too one-sided to be interesting. the game was in fact very evenly contested and it was through the faults of the.. Recreto forwards who were poor in finishing that the Borderers

such managed to win by

big margin. It must be said, however. that the Borderers were superior both in defence and attack, but the Recreio managed to have a fair share of the game and in fact had several scoring opportunities which should have materialised had their forwards been dashing.
