"THE MAN WHO PLAYED GOD”
At The Alhambra
Playing before a king, ás George Arliss does in "The Man Who Play- ed God," now the Alhambra Theatre, is not a new experience for this actor. Arliss has played stage roles with King George. V of England, in the audience and he needed no expert to advise him on- the formalities and general atmos- phère of such a scene.
Mr. Arliss played few" of his best known roles in England. It is only since his talking pictures have been shown in his homeland that the name of Arliss has become famous there as in America. How- ever, he did play "The Green God- dess" for an entire year in London and King George was the most famous of many distinguished per- sonages in his audience,"
Arliss knows what tension, ex- cliement und drama is Involved in such a event. He has profitted by this experience in planning the "king", sequence of "The Man Who Played 'God."
Violet Heming, who played with Arliss in some of his best known stage productions, Bette Davis, in- teresting new ingenue, Louise Closser Hale and Ivan Simpson, are in the cast of the new Arliss picture. Andre Luget plays "king".

"Stamboul Quest" the Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer picture, opening on Sunday at the Queen's Theatre, brings to the screen for the Arst
·time a new team of film lovers. They are Myrna Loy and George Brent, who appear in their first pleture together-Miss Loy as the famous German spy, Annemarie Lesser, and Brent as the reckless, adventurous American, Douglas
Beall, who falls in love with her.
The picture is based upon, an original story by Leo Birinski and throws a new light upon the World War, revealing the involved in- trigue of international espionage as practised by the Central Powers -and of the system of unleashing one spy to catch another.
The story has its beginning in war-ravaged Berlin and carries the, action of the exciting
drama to Turkey,
where Miss Loy, as a German spy masquerading as a British agent, is sent to trap trai- torous All Bey, suspected of being a ti altor to the Central Powers.
Her newest rale presents Miss Loy, as a full-fledged star. Where in former films she has invariably appeared as a supporting player, in "Stamboul Quest" Miss Loy is really The entire story and carries the major part of the plot.
Brent, also is said to give the finest performance of his brief screen career as the impetuous lover who trails his spy-sweetheart to Stamboul and braves grave
dangers to win her love,
Though the supporting "cast is small, It carries several of the Anest characters in pictures. C. Henry Gordon enacts the role of All Bey, Turkish chief of staï sus- pected of being a traitor.
