NEWMAN,

From Our Own Correspondent

London, Sept. 28. Reading Mr. Masefield's poem. an the launch of 534, I detect a faint note of insincerity in his wish to see the great liner "rolling as you 80,"

The last time the Poet Laureate crossed the Atlantic, the liner he travelled in rolled too much. Like that other great man of the sea, Nelson, Mr. Masefield was seasick

Though his best songs have glorified the days of sail, Mr: Mase-❘ field has no prejudice against

steam

He has a special interest in the new Cunard-White Star liner, for he was once, a White Star officer himself and is now engaged in writing a history of the line.

This poem, incidentally, is only the fourth piece of "occasional" verse which Mr. Masefeld has written since he became Laureate. Ele declared when he was appoint- ed in 1930 that he could not write

versea to order."

Not until more than two years afterwards did he produce his first Important "occasional" work-the| beautiful ode for the unveiling of the memorial to Queen Alexandra. Too facile "occasional", verse nas betrayed more than one Laureate into banality. It was one of Mr. Masefield's most illustrious prede cessors, Tennyson, who sang of the opening of the International Exhibition:

And, lol the long laboricus miles Of Palace; lol the giant illes, Rich in model está design. Three other Laureates of the past hundred years-Southey, Wordsworth and Alfred Austin—. Agure prominently in that delight- ful anthology of bad verse, "The Stuffed Owl."

But others besides Mr. Masefield have shown that “occasional” verse can be good verse. It was Tennyson

halled who

Queen Alexandra as "sea-king's daughter from over the sea"-a phrase British people never

which the forgot.
