This is the time of the year I think that tailored suits of light weights are extremely useful and smart looking. too,

Lane Crawford's

Good, smart and comfortable shoes should mean quite a lot to the particular women.

Lane Crawford have on display some extraordinary nice looking shoes. There was a tle shoe in a 'black gipce kid with stitching, this is an American shoe and they have them in Brown and Navy as well. Then there was Swiss Brown Couco, a very, Dressy shoe for any occasion. Before I forget, I be- lleye they are giving a special dis- count of 25% of all light coloured Kid Shoes.

MAIZIE'S

Do you want to look extra at-" tractive at the next dance you at- tend? Well, I suggest to the girl who loves pretty clothes to go and see for herself, the prettiest Slik Taffeta Evening Dress I've seen. The one in a Navy Blue and Yellow plaid with square neck and low back would look gorgeous on a fair girl and the dress is finished off with a narrow frill all around the hem of the skirt.

MARIE'S BEAUTY SHOPS

There is an increasing diver-

between gence

morning and zfternoon fashions. The tailor- ed skirt and coat, with blouse, are cut after the manner of 20 years ago. The coat has some spring in the long basque; the waistline" 1s defined; the neckline is neatly pressed and marked by a collar; the skirt falls trim and straight.

Creed has made this sort of thing in black, dark grey, and dark green. The blouse is high to the throat and there is a shoul- der fur or sable tie. The hat may ke a velvet toque of a brimmed. "elt shape, and the trimming a small bright feather. Other tai- lored costumes are less severe; some coats are loose or semi-ft- ting with belts; some have cape sleeves or cape backs, but all are" unmistakably made for the morn- ing and are of tweeds and soft woollens. Homespun tweeds, many of them British, are tav- ourites Tucked into the neck of a tailored jacket may be a striped or figured silk scarf. The blouse may be hand-knitted and to a bright colour, or resemble a Hight woollen shirt or waistcoat.

Afternoon dress is more formal, being of velvet, satin, or lame, but for the early afternoon the shor- ter skirt is preferred; it is slim and reaches nearly to the ankle, and may be slit at the hem or have barely visible pleats. Both

is more or less Atting and is slightly bloused to dip behind. The waistline la frequently raised in front a little. A brown satin. or velvet skirt with a tunic of dull brown sequing and a velvet sash belt is not uncommon in the afternoon; the sleeyes are long and wide an the wrists, the neck is a shallow square, and the fas- tebing is at the side. Dark plum- coloured satin can be worn in the afternoon with a broadtall'or as- trakbar coat ind i velvet turban,

Brown is an afternoon colour, ether by itself of with another, or some gleaming trimming. Brown -

closed with a bib or tle which may be attached to the bodice. The neckline is now higher in front than at the back.

The little dinner dress appears Just now at almost any sort of afternoon party which continues: late. It may be worn with a hat and be of siz "or wool; ft may be öne dress, or a skirt with a blouse. 4 little wrap usually goes with it. With a pink woollen dress with a madre made in it goes a short brown velvet cape which fastens either in front or behind. Most little dinner dresses have sht hemis, sometimes are brightly, lined; and long sleeves are usual.

IMPORTANT

A Medley Of Styles

There are many high-crowned felts, some almost Tyrolese in trend, arranged with suitably dented crowns and a felt or rib- bon bow. Others have comelike crowns. In direct contrast are the variety of tricornes and slou- ched cowboy styles. Pinched Hom- burgs and a few of the flatter soup-plate, order are still to be

seen.

In fabrics, felt, suede, antelope, velvet and hatfers plush are all manipulated cleverly by the mil- Iners. Black is relleved with brightness. Quills, feathers and wings all play their part.

The tricome is always welcome, as it is far the most becoming shape in the smaller styles. The pork-pie turban is as piquant as ever. Here the crown can be of coloured fabric, with a deep brim of dark velvet. The turban vogue

is much improved by the piquant fly-away veil

HIGHER COIFFURES Cut-out and high backs are a novel. mode in millinery. These styles at least assure of a few turis being left, though the coff- fure is pushed up higher. Fea thers and trimmings at the back of the head give a very new- movement, but the tilt forward and back is somewhat sudden and difficult to wear, unless in the case of the small velvet toque with quantities of fascinating feathery fronds or ribbon to trim the back:

There are just a few flatter and large shapes left, but they are more draped, especially the crowns. We have height this win- ter, and the backless hat allows of our huge collars and furs, being worn in comfort.

It is the larger berets and tri-. cornes that are on the flat side with height provided by trim- mings. Both pack curve-up and wide turn-up of the side brim can take a Tringe or side čurlát s

The eighteenth century felts that have the square crowns are more softly dented and cleverly pinched.

The straight small sailors are pleasing in felt, though with the higher crown I do not think they look so smart as those of the shallower shape. There is ho doubt that high crowds are har- der, and not so generaly becom- ing, but they can grip the head' better, and nowadays felts and fabrics are so soft and easy to manpulate, place, and poise at exactly the right and most be coming angle if they suit the in-
