meant that the dollar was fixed' in terms so far as gold currency was concerned. The natural con- clusion, therefore, was that since the pound and the franc were tied together and the relation of the ollar and the franc was on the same footing, then there must be a steady nexus between the dollar and the pound. But by whose grace? Again the British Equal- sation Fund comes into promiri-

THE POUND SLIPS A PEG
For the "Control" was the instrument which, by supplying the link between pound and franc, established. "ipso facto." a steady relationship between the pound and the dollar. Now Britain has undone that link. And the un- supported pound, with speculators selling it, is falling, in relation to both the franc and the dollar.
At the time of President Booze- velt's devaluation, there were those who contended that the President had put the dollar in its "right. a place with the pound, but it never explained how the United States could ever establish the dollar price of the pound, for surely there is no need emphasising that no country can manage the price of its currency in terms of another without at least the tacit acquiescence of the controller of that particular currency? The British. however, by keeping, the peg on the franc, allowed the Americans to have their currency way with the result that, devalus- tion cheapened the dollar to around $5.10 in terms of pounds as compared with $4.85 at the old parity.
The slipping of the peg which more or less tied the pound to the franc is one sign that the world DOW is
entering a zone of major monetary changes. For some time Indications now are to the effect. the British pound was equivalent that the British have decided to to approximately 77 tranes and take a hand in things, as they were reputed to have done in those in, the money market have advanced one explanation for the September 1931, insofar 23 steadiness of the exchange "be- cheapening the pound in terma tween the golden, frane and the of dollars was concerned.
