OBITUARY

Mr. A. D. Brent

News has been received in Shanghai of the death in England

of Mr. A. D. Brent, formerly of the Hong Kong and Shanghai. Bank, who will be remembered by the older residents of Shanghai. Mr. Brent after some years' service in China was transferred in 1910 to the bank's branch at Hamburg, where he remained until his re- tirement some two or three years £80.

The deceased gentleman was well known in Shanghal for his outstanding dramatic ability, for not only was he a remarkably fine actor, but he had the gift of pro- duction, which is often times very much more difficult and far more exacting. He was, indeed, one of the outstanding figures of the Amateur Dramatic Club, at a time when it, was making a name for itself by the high quality of its productions when such big figures as M. and Mme. Portier, and Mr. Geo, R. Wingrove were geneally in charge of production, and it may safely be said that the high standards of the club were established · just around the time when they and Mr. Brent were all devoting their time to the interests of the club. The services of Mr. and Mra, Brent, who survivas him and who dlso an extemely fine actress, were marked in March, 1910, by a pre- sentation by the members of the Committee of the Shanghai A.D.C.
