Racing Notes And Turf Gossip
Another Big Sweep: Last Week's Racing: The New Subs: St. Leger Prospects
(BY MORNING DEW")
ANOTHER BIG SWEEP As readers are probably aware, the Hong Kong Jockey Club have commenced the sale of tickets on the Derby Sweep. Tickets are $1 each and there is no limit to the sale. It is arit.cipated that 200,- 000 tickets will be sold, in which case the Arst prize will be $85,000. In view of the good demand for tickets in the recent $1 sweep, it may confidently be expected that the Club will suc- ceed, in selling 200,000 tickets. It would appear that the day of the $10 ticket is definitely gone.
THE LUCKY WINNERS Talking about sweepstakes re- mind me that two popular mem bers of the Civil Service Club, Messrs. John Deakin and Bertie Maughan were the joint winners of the prize of $38,000 in the Picnic Bay Stakes run on Satur day. These two gentlemen are well known in lawn bowls dcircles and join their many friends in offering them congratulations on their good fortune.
HEM'S LUCK.. The feature of Saturday's racing was the success of the ""Hem" candidates. At the Annual Race meeting the Ave pontes from this stable appeared very promising, but it is now obvious that they were not quite fully up to their mark then Now that they have had plenty of time to "season," Gladiator and Macaroni appear to be the best of this season's griffins, while Lemberg has de- Anitely improved since the inter- val. Gladiator's win in the six furlongs for "B" Class was a meri- torious one and the pony will be hard to beat in anything up to a mile, unless he is moved into the "A" Class, where, of course, he will find more than his match in the big trio, Liberty Bay. Diana Bayi and Trentbridge.
cade on the post. Writing on the prospects of Saturday's meeting, I drew attention to St. Ives' chances in the following words:
ነን
"I think a good outsider here is St. Ives, who will go to the post with only 146 pounds in the saddle, Mr. Benny Proulx is riding this candidate and 1 shan't be surprised if he manages to turn the tables on the favourites...
As I have said. Benny Proulx was as much responsible for the pony's victory as the light weight. To my mind, he rode the only race possible, when Cavalcade took the lead and set a slow pace. It was only in the run home that the lighter weight carried by Mrs. Lewis' candidate became a telling factor.

ond. Before them, an outstanding sub that I recall to mind was O-moon who won the "Valleys" easily and was unbeatable Over distances up to a mile. Over langer distances, however, O-moon
Dumfries, who was later sold to met more than his match in-
Mr. Chan Tin Son and was raced as Mongolian Stag. These two ponies rather spotted things for
ibs of their season.
A LONG "SHOT" One owner who appears to be exceptionally lucky with the Valley Stakes Mr. Ho Hom "Tong, who has so far won the race twice, with Kom Tong Hall and Bridge Hall. This year, Classic Hall was just pipped by Cavalcade and so, K you are taking a long shot at the "Valleys" it would not be a bad idea to back, Mr. Ho Kom Tong's candidate. Long odds are offered at this early date, I hear.
TWO-DAY MEETING There are sixteen races on the card for the programme for Octo- ber 6 and 10, Le., elght races each In spite of the many rumours to day. Entries close to-morrow but the contrary, Able Amazon was sent to the post in the five fur-

THE NEW SUBS
By this time, I suppose, owners have had a presty, close, look at the subscription grifins, which were drawn for on Monday. The riding, tests were particularly use- fui and the one impression gather- ed was that
the whole consign- inent was of a fairly good class. one or two, of, the ponies looked more promising than the others, but of course, there is no telling at this early stage. doubt that many owners

had No. 90 which was somewhat outstanding and it now remains to be seen whether the pony will live up to its early promise, or whether he well-will, like many others before him: turn out to be only indifferent. Incidentally Messrs. Mackie and Grayburn won the "Valleys" last year with Swale and they now stand an excellent chance of win- ning the event again in 1935.
SATURDAY'S UPSETS Dividends were on the big side on Saturday last due principally to the fallure of several backed favourites. Our leading Jockeys, Messrs. Deltz and Heard falled to score any successes, while Messrs. Butler and Davis managed to share a dead heat in the very last race. Messrs. Botelho and Soares also, falled to
catch the Judge's eye and as all these jockeys Are the popular favourites at the course. It was small wonder that In a day when the fortunes of the sport went against them, the dividends should be big.

SOME RECENT CRACKS In recent years we have had instances of outstanding subscription griffins. Racing Boy of course was an exception, He won every time he started at the 1932 Annual Meeting and there was nothing in the year's consign- ment to touch him. Bistre was the next best and whenever these two appeared together in a subs race, the result was almost certain
