TRAINING GALLOPS

PARADE OF AUSTRALIAN SPRINTERS

Ribble's Convincing Trial

(BY MORNING DEW")

The feature of yesterday's gallops at the course was the number of sprints which Australan candidates were put throuch.

Able Amazon, one of the favourites for the “A” Class sprint -covered six furlongs in 1.30.4 finishing easily in 28 seconds. Bobniak Star was a little faster taking 1.27.1 for the «trip, with the last quarter in 27.3. High Finance" was even faster still taking 1.26.4 for the six furlongs and finishing in 27.3). Just "What took much longer over the first half mile, but falsbed in every way Impressively.

י

The "B" Class Australians were also out to do good "timas":" and Glorious Star covered six furlongs in 1.30.3. taking 28.3 for the last quarter. Australian Boy took 1.29. for the KALING Journey, with the last quarter at 28. Lucy Glitters took 1.28.2 and also Anished in 28.

Ribble, one the strongest challengers to Electric Star on Sa- turday was sent over a mille and a quarter and he put in a very fine gallop. taking 2.50 for the journey, the last half mile be ing in 1.02 and the last quarter in 30. The more I see of this ponty, the more I like hian.

SECOND VICTORY FOR

ENDEAVOUR-

Record Established For The

Triangular Course

Winning the third race in the America's Cup series, to re- cord his second consecutive victory, it looks as if Mr. Tom Sop- with will win four consecutive races as predicted by experts. The Endeavour established a record for the triangular course, the amateur crew co-operating efficiently with the masterly sea-- manship of the owner.

The Endeavour, although handicapped on the homeward journey by a split Genos, jib, erossed the finishing mark with a margin of 45 seconds, the Rainbow then appearing to gain very strongly on the challenger.

Newport, RI, Sept. 18. The Endeavour turned the ser- ond mark at 1.53 p.m.. half a length in front of the Rainbow, who turned at 1.57 p.m.

Two miles from the second mark the Endeavour led by fully 300 yards, but the Rainbow re- mained on the port tack, hoping to get the windward berth should close work be necessary at the buoy.

It was then thought that the boat rounding the second mark first would be the certain winner. barring accidents.

Mr. Bopwith at this time was sailing magnificently. Both yachts

set their Genoa Jibs immediate- ly after the turn.

17

RECORD BROKEN

The Endeavour's time on the windward leg was 1 hour 17 min- utes 1 second, and bettered the Cup record established by Re- lance in 1903 by 2 minutes 57 seconds.

The Endeavour broke the record for the triangular course set by Enterprise In 1930, the official times being:-Endeavour 2 hours 50 minutes 40 seconds. Rainbow 2 hours 51 minutes 25 seconds.

The Endeavour crossed the line Et3.50 p.m. while the Rainbow crossed 51 seconds later.

A mile from the finish the Eb- deavour was 300 yards ahead, and going strong under her mainsail and balloon Jib; although Vander- bilt was gaining slightly.

President Roosevelt was an in- terested spectator throughout.

The official tires now make En- deavour's winning margin 45 sec- onds.

DEFENDER OUTSAILED The Endeavour outsailed the de- fender the entire way, while her crew worked the sails much snap- pler than In the earlier races. The only time she appeared in danger was after the first turn. when Vanderbilt almost pulled off the lead, only to be out- manoeuvred.

SOPWITH ELATED

Newport, Sept. 18. M3, T. O. M. Sopwith, owner and navigator of the British America's Cup challenger, Interviewed after the race to-day, was elated but modest,

li

He praised his craft, saving he was almost pleased they had torn the big Genoa jib at the start, since it showed that the Endeavour could win even though lame.

The Jib split above the clew when it caught in a hank, “We' were unable to set it again on the inst leg because of the split," said Mr. Sopwith. "We were forced to set a light balloon jib on the way home. We were unable to sheet it in as close as we wished and that was the the chlet reason how the Rainbow closed in on the En- deavour on the final leg."

NOT DISCOURAGED.

Mr. Harold 9. Vanderbilt said he was not discouraged by his de- fest. He knew the Endeavour was very fast, he" sald.

The New York Yacht Club has granted permission for the re- moval

of a portion of the Endeavour's' cabin Bttings in or- der to bring them down to the weight of the Rainbow's.

Mr. Sopwith says that only a small amourt will be removed. "We will still carry more than the Rainbow," he said, but he did not intend to take out any more any- way.

The explanation of this decision lies in the fact that before the races experts expressed the opin- fon that the Rainbow's cabin

It looks certain now that En-attings did not accord with the deavour will win the series, the only question is will it be by tour races straight.

The official times for the race were definitely fixed some time after the event, and reveal that the Endeavour covered the course in 3 hours 9 minutes 1 second, as
